Abstract
451,251. Centrifugal machines. FAWCETT, H. W., 3, Kent Road, Harrogate. Feb. 8, 1935, No. 4069. [Class 23] The peripheral discharge apertures of a centrifugal separator have rings b mounted to form a sliding fit therein, so that, when the separator is operating, each ring moves outwards under the influence of a spring or of centrifugal force, to form a tight joint with a seating surface S placed round the separator. The separator has liner plates A<1> from which the material passes to the valves V formed by the rings b. The seating surfaces S are carried by a sleeve B the upper part B<1> of which is formed as an hydraulic cylinder containing a piston C integral with the bowl wall A. The parts are normally in the position shown in Fig. 1. When liquid is introduced into the cylinder through the port E above the piston, the cylinder is raised until the port P in the sleeve registers with the valve V and so permits discharge from the bowl. When liquid is passed through the port F beneath the piston, the cylinder moves down again to the position shown in which the valve V is closed. A valve construction is shown in Fig. 2. The ring b slides in a housing a screwed into the bowl wall A, and is surrounded by a flexible packing sleeve c which maintains a tight joint under pressure exerted centrifugally by the sleeve d. The port P is formed by a renewable nipple g screwed into the seating plate f and the sleeve B. Stops l prevent the valve from being forced too far inwards. In a modification the packing ring is arranged behind the ring b.
