Abstract

400,809. Centrifugal separators. NYROP, A., 18, Hans Jensensvej, Hellerup, Denmark. Jan. 18, 1933, No. 1684. [Class 23.] In a centrifugal separator from which sludge is intermittently discharged through peripheral openings, the packing of the controlling axiallymoving piston is made of hard resilient material which is forced by centrifugal force against the adjacent surface to make a fluid tight joint. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the sludge outlets 6 are opened and closed by the movement of a ring piston 16, which is normally held in its raised position to close the outlets by the pressure of liquid supplied to the chamber 15 through the pipe 33 and the passage 25. When it is desired to discharge sludge, the supply through pipe 33 is cut off and liquid is supplied through pipe 32 and passage 24 to operate the valve 27. This allows the liquid from the chamber 15 to pass through the passage 29, and the pressure of the liquid undergoing treatment in the separator causes the piston 16 to drop. The lower edge of the piston is slotted to leave an outer flexible lip 18 which may be loaded by lead or other heavy material 17, so that during rotation of the bowl the lip is forced against the adjacent surface of the liner 19. The inner surface of the piston is packed by a ring 20 which may be loaded with lead 21. In a modification the piston forms. the bottom of the bowl extending from the liner 19 to the central hub. In another modification the arrangement is applied to a multiple form of separator as shown in Fig. 3. The bowl is partitioned by an intermediate member 37 which has a long central hub 37<1> while its outer rim 42 may be solid as shown on the left hand side of the Figure, or may be recessed as shown on the right. A ring piston 16 is employed to control the sludge outlets 6, and a second piston 36, with a weight-loaded packing ring 60, which makes contact with the intermediate member 37. The movements of the pistons are obtained by means of additional liquid as shown in Fig. 1. The bowl contains inner chambers 43, 44 with disc insets 8<1>, 8 and an outer chamber 45. The piston 36 can be operated so that the tight joints between the member 37, and the upper part of the bowl and the piston are broken, thus permitting heavy separated material to pass into the chamber 45 independently of the discharge from the outlets 6. Specification 312,997, [Class 23, Centrifugal machines &c.], is referred to.
