Abstract

923,497. Centrifugal separators. WESTFALIA SEPARATOR A.G. June 9, 1959 [June 16, 1958], No. 19668/59. Class 23. The bowl of a sludge separator having a liner P has end plates 1, 4 and a cylindrical part 3, one or more inserts 10 being fitted within the sludge-collecting space to form compartments 25, 26 having sludge outlets 8, 9. During separation a piston 6 is urged downwardly by hydraulic fluid supplied by a duct 15 to keep the outlets closed. On cessation of the supply of fluid a valve 18 lifts so that fluid is discharged from a chamber 20 to permit sludge in the compartment 26 to lift the piston and discharge through the outlets 9. After the lifting of the piston the sludge in the compartment 25 lifts the insert and discharges through the outlets 8. Clarified liquid is discharged over a disc 24. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the piston is arranged in the lower part of the bowl, the liquid to be separated is supplied to the midheight of the liner, and the clarified liquid is discharged as light and heavy components. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the insert is fired within the bowl and is engaged by upper and lower pistons. As shown in Fig. 4 the insert is formed by pistons 7 1 , 7 2 which are held to close the outlets by fluid supplied to a cavity 53 by ducts 52.
