Abstract

662,451. Centrifugal-separators. AKTIEBOLAGET SEPARATOR. Jan. 27, 1949. [Jan. 30, 1948] No. 2285/49. Class 23. In a centrifugal separator for liquids, sludge openings 7 are closed by a piston 8 moved by an auxiliary fluid introduced into a chamber 9, and discharge passages 14 from the chamber are closed by valves connected to an annular slide 17. The fluid is supplied to the chamber by means of passages 12, 13, a second chamber 11, and nozzles 10. When it is desired to discharge sludge, excess of fluid is supplied to the chamber 11 to overflow into a passage 24 to feed a further chamber 18. The centrifugal pressure of the fluid in the chamber 18 urges the slide 17 against springs 19 to open the passages 14. The fluid from the chamber 9 is discharged through a nozzle 22 and an overflow 23, As the nozzles 10 have less area than the passages 14, the chamber 9 empties and draws the piston 8 downwardly. When the openings 7 are to be closed, the supply of auxiliary fluid is cut off, and the springs return the slide 17 to close the passages 14. Fluid is then supplied to the chamber 9 to move the piston 8 to close the openings 7. The slide 17 may be closed by mechanical or electromagnetic means, and the chamber 11 may be located at the bottom of the bowl to permit supply of auxiliary fluid by an external pipe. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the slide 17 may be replaced by separate pistons for each passage 14. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
