Abstract
481,072. Centrifugal separators. AKTIEBOLAGET SEPARATOR. June 11, 1937, No. 16230. Convention date, June 26, 1936. [Class 23] The intermittent sludge discharge from a centrifugal separator is controlled by a slide operated by a liquid which is kept completely separated from the liquid under treatment in the separator. In the separator shown in the the liquid to be treated is supplied through the tube 1, the chamber 2 and the passages 4, 5 to the sludge space 7 bounded by the fixed hood 8 and the movable part 9 which can slide on the nave 3. A lower member 21 is fixed to the slide 9 and a member 13 fixed to the nave projects into the space between the upper and lower members of the slide to form two chambers 14, 22. Operating liquid is supplied through the channels 15, 16 to the chamber 14 at a greater rate than it leaks away through the passages 17. The chamber 14 therefore normally contains liquid to the level of the overflow passage 20, and thus holds the slide 9 firmly against the packing 18 to close the sludge discharge aperture 19. When the sludge deposit is sufficient for discharge, the supply of liquid to the separator is cut off and the pipe 15 is closed. The liquid in the chamber 14 passes through the passages 17 and operating liquid is supplied to the chamber 22 through the pipe 23. This forces the slide 9 down to open the aperture 19 to permit the discharge of the sludge. The bowl may be provided with a sludge indicator. In a modification the passages 17 are dispensed with and the excess of operating liquid supplied to the chamber 14 flows out through the channel 20 which is just large enough to take the normal flow. When this is increased, the liquid flows through another channel to the chamber 22 and thus operates the slide. In another modification the pressure chambers 14, 22 are located in a chamber below the bowl. In a further modification a spring is used to move the slide 9 downwards to open the sludge discharge aperture after the supply of liquid to the chamber 14 has been stopped.
