Abstract

423,162. Centrifugal machines. AKTIEBOLAGET SEPARATOR-NOBEL, 8, Fleminggatan, Stockholm.-(Assignees of Strezynski, G. J. ; Poughkeepsie, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 26, 1934, Nos. 27610, 27611, 27612, and 27613. Convention dates, Sept. 27, 1933, Oct. 20, 1933, Dec. 1, 1933, and Dec. 29, 1933. [Class 23] A centrifugal bowl having outlets for sludge at its periphery has at each such outlet a hollow body with a conical valve head movable outwards to close the outlet and inwards to open it, means being provided for controlling the supply and discharge of liquid to and from the hollow body to cause it to move into and out of the closed position. Fig. 3 shows a cross-section through one of the outlets 8 which is adapted to be closed by a hollow body 13 slidable in a guide tube 17 fixed to the bowl. The inner end of the body 13 is situated at a radial distance from the axis between those of the outlets for the lighter and heavier liquid separates so that liquid penetrates through holes 21 in its inner end and normally fills it. A leak port 15 is provided at its outer end and a slight flow of liquid continues until the entrance to the tube 17 is closed by an accumulation of sludge whereupon the body 13 empties until it is sufficiently buoyant to move inwards to open the outlet 8. To avoid waste of the liquid to be treated, the body may be supplied with liquid separately introduced into the bowl within a conical partition 22 from which the liquid is fed to the valve body 13 through a pipe 23 and a passage through a guide 19. The valve in this case is caused to open by cutting off the supply of control liquid. To prevent the control liquid from mixing with the liquid to be treated, the body 13 may be open at its inner end and placed nearer to the axis, a lip being formed on its lower inner edge to spill any surplus liquid supplied. To shorten the time of emptying the valve body in the automatically acting device the greater part of the space within the body may be taken up by a cylindrical projection 33, Fig. 8, fixed relatively to the bowl. To prevent small quantities of waxy material from stopping up the port 15 the annular passage between the tube 17 and the valve may open into a chamber 34 in which the wax is centrifugally trapped. Fig. 5, shows a modification in which a much heavier valve body is partially counterbalanced by a spring 28 having adjustment nuts 29. In this case the valve may be caused to move inwards by slightly reducing the speed of the bowl. As an alternative to the spring 28 a compression spring may be arranged between the periphery of the bowl and a shoulder on the valve body 13.
