Abstract

1408291 Separating lighter and denser constituents of a mixture D V GOUGH 2 Oct 1972 [19 April 1972] 18249/72 Heading BID Apparatus for separating denser and lighter constituents from a mixture of liquids or solid and liquid, e.g. water from fuel, comprises a container with separate upper and lower outlets for the two constituents and containing a float which rises with the accumulation of heavier constituent in the lower part of the housing to shut off the upper outlet for lighter constituent to prevent loss of heavier constituent therethrough and at a preset level, by means of a proximity switch, to actuate external indication means and/or means to open the lower outlet for heavier constituent. Figure 2 shows a two-part cylindrical housing 2, 4 having a tangential inlet 8, upper axial outlet 12 for lighter constituent and normally closed lower axial outlet 36 for denser constituent. Float 14 rises with accumulating dense constituent until, at a predetermined level, magnet 24 mounted on the float triggers an electrical proximity switch 26 mounted on the housing outer wall to open solenoid valve 52 and allow denser constituent to leave. A shut-off valve 42 is mounted on a spindle 16 axially joined to the float to close outlet 12 should the accumulation of denser constituent in the housing become too great. Once valve 42 is in position in valve seat 44, it is held by suction and needs a manual re-set 56. The incoming mixture is heated by heater 66 and enters in a spiral flow around the outside of conical baffle 10. In another embodiment (Fig. 1 not shown) the proximity switch actuates a warning device only and outlet 36 is opened manually.
