Abstract
584,538. Centrifugal separators. AKTIEBOLAGET SUPERIOR. Nov. 1, 1944, No. 21379. Convention date, April 22, 1943. [Class 23] A separator of the rotary bowl type has means for periodically discharging separated sludge 11, comprising a slide 5 subjected on its underside to constant pressure from a separate fluid, and on its upper side to the pressure of the liquid mixture being separated plus the weight of the sludge which gradually builds up as shown by the dotted lines. When the upper pressure exceeds the lower, the slide 5 is forced downwards, packing 7 leaving its seat, and sludge is discharged through one or more ports 21. Loss of liquid, from the separating chamber, is prevented as the sudden release of pressure above the slide 5, causes the latter to move upwards and seal off ports 2<SP>1</SP>. A screen 12 divides the separating chamber into two parts, having plates 8, 9 leading the lighter liquid to an outlet 19. Vanes 21 are provided in the liquid inlet 17. A chamber 20 is kept filled with liquid, from supply pipes 22, to the level A, which normally, is placed at a radius less than that of the level B, corresponding to the radius of the outlet 19, taken up by the inner surface of the rotating liquid being separated, to give a greater pressure under the slide 5. The radius of A may be changed by insertion of a washer 14 gaving a different internal diameter. Vanes 26<SP>1</SP> are provided above the washer 14. The inside of the chambers 20, 27, communicate with the atmosphere by way of passages 25, 28<SP>1</SP>, 30, 31, 32. Leakage liquid passing the packing 7 is led away through a drain 23<SP>1</SP>. Holes 13 are provided to allow a passage upwards of liquid, after the annular area between the screen 12 and the packing 7 is sealed by sludge, but these holes are afterwards sealed up, the consequential pressure on the slide 5 causing it to open. The packing 7 may be conical in cross-section.
