Abstract

476,798. Siphons. DALGREN, G. H., and COSTER, O. F. V. Sept. 15, 1937, No. 25117. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1936. [Class 69 (i)] To increase the rate of discharge of a siphon of the kind which is kept primed by means of a liquid seal 6, 7 at the end of each branch, an extension 5 of the outlet limb 2 extending below the seal 7 is provided, together with means to put it into and out of effective communication with the limb 2, the said means preferably acting in response to the rise and fall of the liquid in which the inlet limb is immersed. In the form shown, the extension 5 depends from a casing 4 surrounding the seal 7 and having connected to it an air inlet tube 13, the open end 14 of which is positioned-above the seal 6 of the inlet limb. When the level of the liquid being siphoned is above the end 14 of the tube 13 it prevents entry of air to the chamber 4, so that the extension 5 is in effective communication with the limb 2 and rapid siphoning is effected. When the liquid level falls below the end 14, air enters the chamber 4 and breaks the connection between the extension 5 and limb 2, siphoning then proceeding slowly under the difference in levels of the liquid being siphoned and that in the receptacle 4. When these two levels become equal at the level of the rim of the seal 6, siphoning ceases and the siphon remains primed owing to the seals 6, 7. The siphon is, on first being put into use, primed through a funnel 17, a cock 18 in the extension 5 being closed, and the end of the inlet limb being also closed by raising the seal 6 until a rubber disc 12 in it contacts with the end of the limb.
