Abstract

476,609. Siphons. KODAK, Ltd., SMITH, K. S., and CASBURN, E. V. June 16, 1936, No. 16786. [Class 69 (i)] A pilot siphon tube 1, 2 having an air pressure chamber 4 for initiating the flow in it is connected with a siphon 5, 6 of substantially larger bore so that when the siphons are inunersed the smaller automatically starts the flow in the larger. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the pilot siphon is arranged within the larger, and the lower part of the limb 1 is surrounded by an air-chamber 4 which is perforated at the bottom and communicates at the top through an aperture 14 with the bore of the limb. When the limb is immersed the liquid rises slowly in the chamber and compresses the air in it, which enters the limb 1 through the aperture 14 and forces liquid over the bend of the pilot siphon, thus starting its action. The flow of liquid in the limb 2 exhausts air through a connection 7 from the limb 6 of the main siphon, the lower end of which is initially placed in a liquid seal (not shown), so starting the action of the main siphon. A bend 8 in the limb 2 below the junction of the connection 7 maintains suction in the latter at starting. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the pilot siphon is outside the main siphon, and the initial liquid seal for the discharge limb of the latter is formed by a cup 16 filled by the discharge from the pilot siphon. A splash guard 19, open at the bottom, surrounds the lower ends of the siphon tubes and the cup 16.
