Abstract
321,950. Coltman, H. Aug. 16, 1928. Liquid-seal valves.-Flushing cisterns are provided with a pipe 2, Fig. 3, on which is mounted a movable bell 8, the lower edge of which is adapted to be immersed in mercury contained in a cup 4, which may surround a collar 4a on the pipe. The device may be used alone or connected with the long leg of a siphon 9 provided with an air inlet tube the lower end of which opens into the cistern at a slightly higher lever than the siphon inlet. The descent of the bell may be regulated by a plunger working in a central guide cylinder or a cylinder 17 provided with an inlet valve 17a and small escape openings 19a. In a modification, the bell has an open-topped tube 21, Fig. 4, connected to a lever fulcrummed at 23, the other end of the lever supporting a vessel 24 provided with small holes 25a near the bottom, and the cup has a wall 20, Fig. 5, with perforations 21. In order 'to prevent the mercury from being discharged with the water, the bell may have a tube 32, Fig. 6, ported at 2a and working in the pipe 2, the arrangement being such that the bell is clear of the mercury before water can enter the pipe 2.
