Abstract

1,032,651. Siphon-discharge water-waste-preventing cisterns. K. SILK. Aug. 27, 1963 [Sept. 3, 1962], No. 33712/62. Heading E1C. In a flushing cistern 1 of the kind having an valve 15 to control the filling thereof to a desired level, an outlet 3 extending down from the wall 2, and manually-operable control means 12 to initiate siphon discharge, the dischargecontrol means comprises a substantially vertical reciprocable tube 4 having a closed top end and an open lower end slidable in the outlet 3 with an aperture 7 above the water level when the tube 4 is in the normal raised position, but below the level when it is lowered, and a chamber around the tube 4 defined partly by a bellows 8 communicating with the cistern lower part through an opening 10, to that when the tube 4 is depressed for the aperture 7 to be below the water level, water flows through it to the outlet 3 to create siphonic action to drain the cistern 1 below the opening 10. Above the opening 10 may be an air inlet 17, controlled by a valve which is closed when the means 12 is operated to start siphonic action, and is held in the operated position, the cistern 1 being then drained below the opening 10, whereas when the means 12 is released after being operated to start the action but before completion, air enters the chamber through the inlet 17 to stop the action before it can enter it through the opening 10. The manual means 12 acts through a pin 5 on the top of the tube 4 to lower it. In a modification the tube 4 has a top air inlet, closed when lowered by a valve member on the pin 5, so that on then releasing the manual means, air can enter the tube from above to interrupt siphonic action.
