Abstract
952,018. Ventilating closets. FI-JAX CO. June 14, 1962 [June 16, 1961], No. 22980/62. Heading E1C. An air-venting device 15 usable, e.g. in a water closet 18 comprises a cup-like case 36, within which, an exhaust tube 95 extends upward, over which extends a trap cup or hood 45 to produce a seal therewith, (Fig. 4), which is movable to and from the tube 95, and a case cover 38 open at the bottom below the top of the case 36. The cover 38 has an anti-siphoning opening 42 and valve means therein close this opening when the hood 45 is moved from the tube 95. The cover 38 contains a cylinder 62 in which is a piston 63, connected by a rod 55 to a lever 49 connected to the hood 45, and has a water intake passageway sealed by a valve stem 67, a passageway 60 to the cylinder 62 and a nozzle passageway 75 which is so aligned with the end of the exhaust tube 95 that the end 74 of the stem 67 produces a jet spray from the orifice or passageway 75, the stem 67 being retracted by suitable means to do so. The device 15 is mounted within a water tank 17 (Fig. 1) into which the bottom of the cover 38 extends to seal the interior thereof and the orifice 75 from which air is drawn by the jet spray when directed into the tube 95, restricted at 93 to act as a Venturi with water passage. The water closet 18 has a bowl 23 into which an overflow pipe 43 leads and the tube 95 extends above the water level and down from the tank 17 (as the tube 16) to the drain outlet 24 and is encircled by the cup 36 below this level, the hood 45 fitting over it having its lower end in the water in the cup 36. To form the spray a pipe 27 admits pressure water into the tank 17, to passageways 60 and 66 and past the stem 67 of a valve which is manually operated. The water then enters the cylinder 62 to operate a piston 63 and thus the lever 49 to raise the hood 45 to release the spray. The stem 67 is lifted by a lever 78 pivoted at 79 when a crank 81 of a pivoted rod is raised by turning a handle 35 clockwise. Turning anticlockwise reverses the action and if continued rod 107 is raised and float 32 to give a flush. Various forms of valves to close the opening 42 are described. In a modified form of device 15 applicable to a single-piece toilet the trap cup is connected to the walls of the case cover and serves as a means to support the cover within the tank. This form has two handles, one for flushing and one for operating the ventilating device, but this system may be modified so as to have only one handle.
