Abstract

902,872. Sanitary closets. LILJENDAHL, S. A. J. Aug. 8, 1958 [Aug. 16, 1957], No. 12373/62. Divided out of 902,871. Class 26. In a water-closet assembly comprising a bowl 20 with a bottom outlet normally closed off by a valve 22 intermittently operable to be open to discharge the bowl and a mechanism 31 to control the operation of a valve 22 so as to open it and reclose it after the lapse of a predetermined period of time, the outlet is connectible through a waste conduit 23 to a source of vacuum to promote discharging and the mechanism 31 is operated by a vacuum-driven motor controlled by a starting valve 72 in a device 35. In one form shown the, mechanism 31 controls a supply of pressurized water for flushing the bowl 20 and the motor comprises a cylinder 33 and a weight-loaded piston 32. The valve 72 opened by a handle 37 acting on a spindle 86 is kept open by a latch pawl 83 moved to be inoperative by the action on an arm 85 of a suitably-adjustable abutment 88 on the piston rod 42 as it approaches the end of its upward stroke. The waste conduit 23 opens into a tank 25 under vacuum, acting to operate the motor 32, 33 communicating therewith through the conduits 23 and 34. A flushing valve 27 is controlled by the mechanism 31, the evacuating line 36 from the motor containing a valve member 77 in the device 35 adjustable under the control of the piston 32 between a restricting and an unrestricting position in the line, so as to impart to the piston 32 different speeds during different stages of its upward movement. The cylinder 32 has a bottom wall having an opening through which is passed the piston rod 42 of a cross-section varying so as to form a restricted passage, varying in area in response to the position of the piston 32, for the air entering into or emitted from the space below the piston. The interior of the cylinder 33 communicates with the ambient air through an opening 89 the area of which determines the piston's lowering speed. The mechanism 31 controls the flushing-water supply by opening and closing a cut-off valve 27 in a pipe line 26 from a source, the valve 27 remaining closed during the major portion, at least, of the time interval when the valve 22 is open. The cutoff valve 27 is kept closed under the action of a restoring force, and opened by the piston 32 under the control of a cam track on a member 44 carried by the rod 42 through the medium of a bell-crank lever 46 co-operating with the track. The mechanism 31, during the piston's upward stroke, opens and recloses the flushing valve 27 and opens the valve 22, the valve member 77 in the device 35 being moved to restrict as the flushing valve 27 is opened, to ensure flushing of the bowl 20 during a predetermined time period before the valve 22 is opened. Specifications 867,664, 902,873 and 902,874 also are referred to.
