Abstract

1,106,961. Water closets. S. A. J. LILJENDAHL. 11 March 1965 [16 March, 1964], No. 10418/65. Heading E1C. [Also in Division F2] A valve adapted to be fitted in the discharge conduit of a water closet bowl in the bottom portion of which a quantity of water is maintained by the valve being in its closed position, there being a partial vacuum existing in and acting on the discharge side of the valve, comprises a resilient sleeve 7 mounted on a pipe 1 part of which is cut away along line 4, the sleeve being deformed when a vacuum exists within the pipe to engage a ridge 3 in the pipe. In the working embodiment of Fig. 5, the sleeve is formed with lugs 21, 22 in which are fastened pins 23, 24 which engage, with lost motion, arms 25, 26 carried by spade-like members 27, 28 attached to a housing 29 carrying a weight 30, the housing being flexibly attached at 33 to a fixed housing 31 connectable via 32 with a vacuum source or atmosphere. To open the valve, a vacuum is created in the housings 29, 31 causing the latter to move upwardly and thereby open the valve. Closure is effected by venting housings 29, 31 to atmosphere. In the embodiment of Fig. 6, the connection 32 is made via two-way cock 37 to the downstream pipe 11, and the sleeve is replaced by a resilient domeshaped member 43 fastened at its perimeter 45 to the pipe, which in this case is in the shape of an inverted 'U' the top of which has been removed. As shown in Fig. 7 the spades 27, 28 need not pinch the resilient member against the pipe wall since the vacuum existing in the downstream side will suffice to produce a closure where the member adopts the shape shown. The downstream side of the resilient member is preferably thicker or stronger than the upstream side; the ridge need not be perpendicular to the axis of the pipe and the closing points represented by the spades may be assymetrical with respect to the ridge. The diameter of the pipe at the closure point may be less than that on the downstream side.
