[Class 26] A ventilating device for the pan of a water closet comprises an exhausting device connected to a hole in the flush pipe, a water jet operating the device to remove gases from the pan and deliver them to a discharge pipe opening into the pipe leading from pan to sewer, and a liquid sealed valve normally closing the discharge pipe but adapted to be opened when means are operated to supply water to the jet. A substantially cylindrical casing is connected by an aperture to the flush pipe 5 and is provided with a turbine 1 driven by water from a jet 4, connected to a pressure supply and controlled by a cock coaxial with the turbine, so as to exhaust gases by centrifugal action from the pipe 5 and to force them through a discharge pipe 6, and the casing is formed at its bottom as a tank 8 into which the pipe 6 extends. A pivoted up-valve 7 is operated by lever 9 and link 10 coupled to the cock, so that, when the cock is closed, the valve co-operates with the water in the tank 8 to close the discharge pipe.
