In a water-closet assembly comprising a bowl 20 with a bottom outlet normally closed by a valve 22 intermittently operable to be open to discharge the bowl and a mechanism 31 to control the operation of the valve 22 so as to open it and reclose it after the lapse of a predetermined period of time, the mechanism 31 controls a supply of pressurized flushing water for the bowl 20 and a device operates in response to the free liquid level in the bowl 20 to perform an action on the mechanism 31 when it rises above a predetermined level. The action of the device may be such as to prevent initiating the mechanism 31 or it may be such as automatically to initiate the mechanism 31 to empty the bowl. In the form shown the said device comprises a double-armed lever 121 fulcrumed about a fixed horizontal pivot 122 and carrying at one end a weight 124 keeping said lever in a normal position and at the other end a receptacle 123 communicating through a flexible pipe 126 with the basin 21 of the bowl 20 whereby the lever 121 will be tilted when a certain quantity of water has collected therein. The lever 121 acts on the mechanism 31 after its tilting from a predetermined normal position and engages on a vertically-adjustable member 128 guided on a frame 40. The mechanism 31 opens the valve 22 at the end of the upward stroke of the piston 32 and recloses it during its downward stroke, the valve 22 being opened against the action of a restoring force by inter-engagement of a dog member on the piston rod 42 and a movement-transmitting member coupled to the valve 22, and kept open by a weight-loaded locking lever which, during the downward stroke, is released by an abutment on the piston rod 42 so that the valve 22 closes. The locking lever has a downward extension to co-operate with the abutment to swing the locking lever into its release position. The outlet is connected through the waste conduit 22 to a source of vacuum at 25 for discharging a lever 103, spindle 107 and extension thereof transmitting movement between the initiating member 37 and an actuating valve 72 in the vacuum conduit 95 to a piston motor 32, 33 so as to open the valve 72 only when the piston 32 is in a position corresponding to the closed position of the valve 22, To do so a forked handle rod 99 has a vertically elongated slot 105 for articulation by a pivot pin 104 to the lever 103, joined to a rod 108 on which is a spring 110 urging it upwards for the pin 104 to be at the top of the slot 105 when the rod 108 and the piston rod 42 are not in the lowermost position, the pin 104 being at the bottom of the slot 105 when they are, i.e. when the valve 22 is closed, the lever 103 being then movable but otherwise immovable. To prevent initiating the mechanism with excess liquid level the rod member 128 may be removed and the long arm of the lever 121 connected with the end of the wire 118, so that on swinging the lever 121 about the pivot 122 a rod 115 is pulled into a hole 116 and the valve 72 will not be shifted.
