EE-1l- Ey/m $55? VQ@ This invention relates lto air venting devices, and particularly to a device which produces a low pressure area for drawing in and discharging air, and is a continuation in part of application Serial No. 859,402, liled December 14, 1959, for Water Closets, since abandoned.
The device may be employed to vent any confined area where a flow of water is available and, by Iway of example, the device is illustrated as being applied to the water reservoir of a toilet. The device is suppor-ted upon a tube which extends upwardly in the reservoir through the bottom thereof from a drain connection, The device has a centrally disposed, upwardly presenting cuplike case having within its interior an upwardly extending, end restricted tube which forms a seat for a ball seal, and an orifice providing a venturi effect which assists in the flow of air to the drain. The upwardly presenting cuplike case is enclosed by a downwardly presenting cover which is open a-t the -bottom at opposite ends of the cuplike case. The bowl filling tube within the reservoir extends upwardly at one end of the cover above the cuplike case and the water line of the reservoir. A trap cup extends within the cuplike case over the restricted tube, sealed thereto by a ball seal secured to the end thereof. The ball seal lits into the restricted orifice at the end of the tube. The trap cup is hinged to a boss of the cuplike case'and a lever is attached thereto which swings the trap cup upwardly, uncovering the end of the restricted tube. The ball seal extends through the trap cup and engages a flapper valve and forces it against the wall of the case cover to seal an opening therein which was provided to maintain a no-pressure area above the water therewithin.
The top closed end of the case cover has a boss thereon containing a cylinder in which a piston is mounted having a pistonirod thereon which is connected to one end of a link pivoted at its center to the cover. The other end of the link is pivoted to the trap cup to swing it to an open position when the piston is moved downwardly. Adjacent to the piston, a valve is provided which is springpressed downwardly on a seat which seals a passageway from a water supply line. The valve has a stem extending downwardly thereon on which an outwardly liaring atomizing head is provided which permits a flow of water thereabout when the valve is -initially raised to wash out any particles which may have collected thereabout. A passageway extends from below the valve seat into the top of the cylinder for operating the piston downwardly when the va'lve is open. Links are provided for opening the valve by a separate handle or by the handle which flushes the toilet when moved clockwise to an overcenter position. When the handle is so moved, the valve is raised, causing -a gush of water to wash out the passageways, and as the passageway is restricted by the atomizing head, the water liows to the cylinder and moves the piston downwardly to swing the trap cup from a position over the lrestricted tube to one closing the liapper valve for sealing the opening in the case cover wall. As the full force of the water passes over the atomizing head, the water is broken up into small particles and caused to pick up air in a well known manner. The'valve and nozzle passageway are disposed in aligned relation to the restricted tube so that the atomized water is directed thereinto. A substantial vacuum is produced within the interior of the case cover due to the atomization of the water and its passage through the restricted tube into the ite States Patent ice drain. The vacuum or low pressure area causes air to be drawn in from the openings in the inner edge of the toilet bowl rim through the bowl fill tube, into the low pressure area of the case cover, down the restricted tube and drain into the sewer.
When the toilet is to be iiushed, the handle is turned counterclockwise, thereby breaking the over-center relationship of the links which operated the valve of the device to permit the valve to seat and cut oi the flow of water to the device. The water above the piston is free to iiow from the passageway to the cylinder as the piston is moved upwardly by a spring associated with the link system as well as by gravity due to the weight of the trap cup which then closes over the restricted tube. A seal is produced by the water within the cuplike case and also by the engagement of the restricted tube by the ball seal within the trap cup. This movement of the trap cup released the flapper valve and the no-pressure area is established within the oase cover.
Accordingly, the main objects of the invention are: to provide an air Ventilating device which, through a flow of water, produces a low pressure area which draws air thereinto; to provide an air Ventilating device which, through a flow of water, produces fa low pressure area therein, with an opening which maintains a no-pressure area until the opening is closed; to open a drain through the pivoting of a trap cup yfrom a position over t-he end of a drain tube which permits atomized water to be directed thereinto to a position for closing a iiapper valve to permit a low pressure area to be built up with-in a sealed area; to pivot an inverted cup from the end of' an `exhaust tube by a piston which is operated by a iiow of water which is atomized and directed into the tube' to produce a low pressure 'area after a iiapper valve closes' an antisiphoning opening by the final movement of the cup, and, in general, to provide a Ventilating device operated by the movement of water under pressure which is simple in construction, positive in operation and economical of manufacture.
Other objects and features of novelty of the invention will be specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of the invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to FIGS. 1 to 5 inclusive, the device 15 of the present invention is illustrated as being mounted on a drain tube 16 within the box 17 of a toilet 18. The drain tube =16 passes through the bottom of the box 17 to which it is sealed by a fitting 19 in the usual manner. The yfitting also seals a drain tube 2-1 in extension of the tube 16, the end of the tube 21 extending into a d-rain 22 ofthe toilet bowl 23 through an aperture in the wall thereof to which it is secured by a `Iixture 24. A water supply conduit 25 passes through the bottom of the box 17 and is connected to a supply pipe 26 within the box. The supply pipe has a valve (not shown) on the upper end there of controlled -by a float ball in the usual manner. A water supply tube 27 is secured to the bottom of the pipe 26 and extends upwardly to be joined to a itting 28 connected to the device. It is to be understood that the tube 27 could be connected to the supply conduit 25 outside of the box and extended upwardly to va point above the water line 29 where it would be extended inwardly through the wall of the box to the iitting 28. The base of the box has a valve seat 31 closed by a float ball 32 secured on the end of a rod 33. A suitable linkage system y34 is connected to an operating handle 35 by which the ball 32 is raised from the valve seat 31 so that the water within the box can flush into the bowl 23.
The device of the present invention, as more specifically illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 4, comprises a `cuplike case 36 containing a threaded aperture 37 into which the drain tube 16 is threaded, preferably in sealed relation therewith, The cuplike case forms part of the cent-ral lower portion of a case cover 38 which has bottom openings 39 and 41 and a side -antisiphoning opening 42. A bowl fill tube 43 extends upwardly through the opening 41 aligned with a supply tube 44 by which the bowl of the toilet is lilled after a ilushing operation. A trap cup 45 has a boss 46 secured by a U-shaped hinge element 47 to a boss 48 within the cuplike case 36. A lever V49 is secured by a pivot 51 within a `slot 52 of a boss 53 on the side of the case cover 38. One end of the lever 49 is connected by a pivot 54 to the boss 46 of the trap cup 45, the other end being connect-ed to the lower end of a piston rod 55. A spring 56 also connects the end of the lever 49 to which the piston rod 55 isconnected to an aperture in a boss 57 on a closure element 58. The case cover is preferably of unitary construction with the cuplike case 36, and the closure element 58 is sealed to the top edge of the case cover, herein illustrated as by screws 59.
`The closure element 58 has a boss 61 thereon containing a cylinder 62 within which a piston 63 operates. The piston is connected to the upper end of the piston rod 55 by a pair of nuts 64 and is provided with an O-ring 65 on the bottom surface for sealing engagement with the bottom of the cylinder. The boss 61 contains an aperture 66 for a valve stem 67, having an O-ring 68 thereon which is urged downwardly by a spring 69 onto a seat 71. An O-ring 72 is provided about the spring 69 for sealing the upper portion of the aperture 66. A projection 73 of the valve stem 67 carries an atomizing head 74 a substantial distance below the O-ring 68. The atomizing head forms a nozzle within the opening 75 and a passageway 60 connects the opening 75 to the upper part of the cylinder 62 above the piston 63. The top of the valve stern carries a collar 77 which is engaged by one end of a lever 78. The opposite end of the lever extends in a slot 79 and forms a pivot point about which the lever 78 pivots when a crank 81 of a pivoted oper-ating rod 82 is moved to raised position, to thereby raise the valve, stem 67.
The rod 83 has a downwardly extending arm 83 containing an eye into which an end 84 of a pull rod 85 is engaged. The pull rod 85 has an extending end portion86 projecting into an arcuate slot 87 of a plate 88 Which S part of a leVer 89 which is actuated by a handle 35 to, liush the toilet when the handle 35 is turned in a counterclockwise direction. When the handle is turned clockwise, the plate 88 turns to the right, as illustrated in FIG. 5, to thereby move the pull rod l to the right to raise the valve stern 67 to open position, as illustrated in FIG. 4. This movement is continued until the end 86 of the pull rod 85 reaches over-center position which retains the handle in the turthermost clockwise movement required to retain the valve stern 67 in raised position. The clockwise and counterclockwise movement of the handle occurs as viewed from the front of the box 17 which is the reverse movement in FIG. 5, since the Section thereof was taken from the inside of the box. The initial movement of the valve stem 67 to raised position separates the O-ring 68 from the seat 71, permitting water to move downwardly through the opening 75 to wash out any particles which may have been collected about the seat, Further upward movement of the valve stern raises the atomizing head 7.4 into the nozzle opening 75 to aerate the water as it passes along the wall of the opening and over the edge of the head. The back pressure thus created causes a flow of water through the passageway 68 into the top of the cylinder 62 onto the piston 63 to force it downwardly until the O-ring 65 forms a seal with the bottom of the cylinder. The downward movement of the piston 63 and rod 55 tilts the lever 49 and swings the trap cup 45 upwardly from the position illustrated in FG. 2 to that illustrated in FIG. 4. This unscats a ball seal 92 from a seat 93 which forms a restricted opening 94 in the end of a tube 95 disposed in extension of the drain tube 16 within the cuplike case. The ball seal 92 has a head 96 on the outer side of the trap cup which engages in end 97 of a V-shaped spring strip 98 which has the opposite end 99 pivoted to spaced bosses 101 on the cover 58. The strip 98 carries a sealing disk 102 which is larger than the opening 42 which is sealed thereby when the trap cup 45 is in open position. The nozzle opening 75 is aligned with the restricted opening 94 of the tube 95 and the atomized water from the nozzle opening carries the air picked up thereby into and through the opening 94, into the drain tube 16. Further movement of air is effected by the venturi action resulting from the passage of the water through the reduced area 94 so that the area above the water line 29 within the case cover 38 is at reduced pressure. The air drawn by the water through the opening 94 is replenished from the bowl till tube 43, and since this is connected to the rim of the bowl containing the flush openings, a suction is provided on the interior of the bowl through the openings, withdrawing air from the bowl. The air withdrawn from the bowl passes into the case cover andis carried down the drain tube 16 with the ato-mized water.
When the toilet is to be flushed, the handle 35 is rotated counterclockwise, moving the rod 85 from overcenter relationship to permit the crank 81 to return to its oli position along with the lever 78 and valve stern 67 which permits the O-ring 68 to engage the seat 71 and seal off the iiow of water from the tube 27. The weight of the trap cup 45 and the bias of the spring 56 causes the trap oup to swing downwardly over the tube 95- to have the ball seal 92 rest upon the seat 63 to seal the drain tube 16. A seal is also provided for the end of the tube 95 by the water within the cuplike case 36. The movement of the toilet ushing handle downwardly raises the arm 89 along with a rod 104 and a ring on the end thereof which engages an eye 196 on a rod 107 which is threaded into the float ball 32 to unseat the ball from the valve seat 31 and permit the water from the box 17 to ilow into the bowl 23 to flush the toilet in the usual manner. A supply tube 44 extends through the cover 58 in sealed relation thereto directed toward the inner surface of the bowl till tube 43.
Referring to FIGS. 6, 7 and l1, the air venting device is illustrated as being applied to a reservoir 109 of a single-piece toilet 111. In this arrangement, the bowl of the toilet has been provided with a separate passageway 112 terminating in a rectangular end portion 113 above the water line 29 of the reservoir 10. The bowl is also provided with an aperture 114 into the drain passageway 1115 in which a threaded drain tube 116 is secured. The case cover 117 is provided with a boss 118 which engages the under surface of the rectangular end portion 113 and is pressed tightly thereagainst by a nut 119 when screwed down upon a truncated conical washer 121 which seals the threaded drain tube 1:16 in the aperture 114. A gasket 122 seals the end of the rectangular end portion 113 to the adjacent face of the case cover 117 abo-ut an aperture 123 disposed therethrough. The other portion of the device is the same as that described with regard to the illustration of FIGS. 2 and 4, the low pressure area within the upper portion of the case cover drawing the air from the bowl through the passageway 1112 and aperture 123 of the case cover from which it is `forced down through the threaded drain tube 115l into the drain 115 of the bowl.
A handle 124 operates a lever 125 and rod 125 to raise the oat ball to ilush the toilet. A second operating handle 127 operates a link 12S to pull a rod 129 and swing the arm y83 to raise the valve stem 6? and operate the air Ventilating device. The rod 129 has its end pass over-center position relative to the link 123 when the handle 27 is pushed downwardly7 to maintain the valve stem 67 in raised position. The downward movement of the handle 124 to flush the toilet causes an arm 131 to move upwardly and cause the clockwise rotation of the link 128 until the end of the rod 129 passes from over-center position and permits the arm 83 to swing back to a vertical po-sition, as illustrated, to permit the valve stem 67 to move downwardly to close the water passageway to the device. In this arrangement, the water supply tube 27 extends downwardly at 132 and connects into the water line to the valve 13d through the porcelain portion 133 of the reservoir 1129. The onepiece toilet operates in the conventional manner and will not be described further herein.
In FIG. 8, a further form of linkage system for operating the arm 83 is illustrated, that which embodies a rod 134 which is reversely bent to have an extending end or detent portion 135. The reverse portion of the rod extends over a pin 136 on the operating lever 125 by which the toilet is flushed. When the handle 124 is raised, the pin 136 draws the rod 134 rearwardly and downwardly to swing the arm 83 suticiently to raise the valve stem 67 and have the extending end portion 135 abut against the end face of a boss 137 to hold the Valve of the stem in open position. When the handle 124 is moved downwardly to flush the toilet, the pin 136 moves upwardly to move the end of the detent portion 135 oi the end of the boss 137, thereby releasing the arm 83 and permitting it to move to its original position to have the valve stem 67 move to valve closed position.
In FiG. 9, a further form of Valve is illustrated for closing the opening 42 in the wall of the case cover 38. In this arrangement, a dish-shaped exible valve 133 is mounted upon -a leaf spring 139 having a reduced end portion 141 which extends into a slot 142 in a boss 143. The wider portion of the leaf spring 139 rests upon the boss, with the end 144 bent at an angle to retain the leaf spring 139 in desired position. The dish-shaped valve 138 is secured to the leaf spring 139 by rivets 145 or other means in position to be moved over the opening 42 and seal the passageway therethrough when the trap cup 45 is moved thereagainst.
In FIG. 10, a leaf spring '146, similar to the leaf spring 139, is illustrated which is bent iu U shape to have an extending arm 147. The U-shaped end portion 148 is secured in a boss 149 by a pin 151. When the trap cup 45 is open, it rests against the extending arm 147 and a spring action resulting therefrom forces the dish-shaped valve 13S against the wall of the case cover about the opening 42 to seal the opening. The arm 147 provides additional spring pressure for forcing lthe trap cup 45 away from the wall of the case cover 38 into sealed position with the drain extension within the cup-shaped case.
While various arrangements have been illustrated `for attaching the air venting device of the present invention to the reservoir of different types of toilets, it is to be understood that the same arrangement can be employed for securing fthe air venting device of the present invention to other confined areas, such as laboratory sinks, gas Vgenerating hoods, and the like, so that the illustration and description of the device as being applied to toilets is not to be considered limiting.
What is claimed is:
1. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening through the bottom of the case, a trap cup extendin-g over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said tr-ap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to sai-d cuplike case open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, said case cover having lan opening above the bottom thereof, and means closing said opening when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube.
2. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting `cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening through the bottom of the case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said lcase to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to said cuplike case open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, said case cover having an opening above the bottom thereof, means closing said opening when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, a boss on said case cover containing a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, and a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup.-
3. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening through the bottom of the case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has Water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and `from said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to said cuplike case open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, said case cover having an opening above the bottom thereof, means closing said opening when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, a boss on said case cover containing a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, and a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup, said connection embodying a lever pivoted intermediate its ends on said case cover and connected at one end to said piston rod and at the oppo site end to said trap cup.
4. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening through the bottom of the case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith vwhen the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and yfrom said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to said cuplike case open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, said case cover having an opening above the bottom thereof, means closing said opening when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, a boss on said case cover containing a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup, said boss having a water intake passageway, a valve stem in said boss sealing said intake passageway, said boss having a passageway to said cylinder and a nozzle passageway connected to said intake passageway, the
7 nozzle passageway .being aligned with the end of said exhaust tube, an aspirating head on the end of said valve stem, and means for retracting said valve stem and moving said aspirating head relative to said nozzle passagew-ay.
5. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case', an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening through ythe bottom of the case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to said cuplike case open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, said case cover having an opening above the bottom thereof, means closing said opening when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, a boss on said case cover containing a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup, said boss having a water intake passageway, a valve stem in said boss sealing said intake passageway, said boss having a passageway to said cylinder and a nozzle passageway connected to said intake passageway, the nozzle passageway being aligned with the end of said exhaust tube, an aspirating head on ythe end of said valve stem, means for retracting said valve stem and moving said aspirating head relative to said nozzle passageway, and means for operating said valve stem to retracted position and for retaining the intake passageway open.
6. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening through the bottom of the case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin,.means supporting said trap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to said cuplike case ope-n at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, said casecover having an opening above the bottom thereof, and means closing said open when said trap cup is moved from said exhausttube, the upper end of said exhaust tube having a restricted area to produce a venturi elect.
7. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening throughthe bottom of the case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to said cuplike case open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, said case cover having an opening above .the bottom thereof, and means closing said opening when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, the upper end of said exhaust tube having a restricted area to produce a venturi effect, said trap cup having a ball seal therein which engages said restricted end to provide an additional seal for said exhaust tube.
8. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening through the bottom of the case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for pivoted movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to said cuplike case open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, said case cover having an opening above the bottom thereof, and a valve movable to close said opening when said trap cup is pivoted from said exhaust tube.
9. in an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening through the bottom of the case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithiin, means supporting said trap cup for pivoted movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to said cuplike case open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, said case cover having an o-pening above the ybotto-m thereof, a valve movable to close said opening when said 4trap cup is pivoted from said exhaust tube7 a boss on said case cover containing a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, and a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup.

In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for pivoted movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover on said cuplike case open at the bottom, said case cover having an opening above the bottom thereof, a valve movable to close said opening by said trap cup when pivoted from said exhaust tube, a boss on said case .cover containing a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup, said boss having a water intake passageway, a valve stem in said boss sealing said intake passageway, Isaid boss having -a passageway connected to said intake passageway, the nozzle passageway eing aligned with the end of said exhaust tube, an aspirating head on the end of said valve stem, and means for retracting said valve stem and moving said aspirating head relative to said nozzle passageway.
il. rifhe combination with a toilet reservoir and an air venting device, said device having a cuplike case containing an exhaust tube which is connected to a drain passageway o the toilet bowl, a case cover on said cuplike case open at the bottom and having a block on the upper end thereof, means connecting the toilet `bowl to within the upper portion ot said case cover for drawing air from the bowl, a trap cup Within said cuplike case extending over said exhaust tube in movable relation to said case, said block having a passageway aligned with said exhaust tube containing means for connection to a water supply conduit, a vaive stem within said passagewey having means engageable with a valve seat in said passageway, an aspirating head on the end of the stem movable into the discharge end of the passageway when the valve stem is raised, means for moving said trap cup away from the end of said exhaust tube, antisiphoning means on said case cover which is rendered inoperative when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, and means for moving said trap cup.
12. The combination with a toilet reservoir and an air venting device, said device having a cuplike case containing an exhaust tube which is connected to a drain passageway of the toilet bowl, a case cover on said cuplike case open at the bottom and having a block on the upper end thereof, means connecting the toilet bowl to within the upper portion of said case cover for drawing air from the bowl, a trap cup within said cuplike case extending over said exhaust tube in movable relation to said case, said block having a passageway aligned with said exhaust tube containing means for connection to a water supply conduit, a valve stem within said passageway having means engageable with a valve seat in said passageway, an aspirating head on the end of the stem movable into the discharge end of the passageway when the valve stem is raised, meansfor moving said trap cup away from the end of said exhaust tube, antisiphoning means on said case cover which is rendered inoperative when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, means for movsaid trap cup, said means for moving said trap cup embodying a cylinder in said block means, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup, said block containing a passageway from said water supply passageway to the top of said cylinder, said connection of the piston rod to said trap -cup embodying a lever pivoted interjacent its ends Vand connected to said piston rod and to said trap cupat opposite ends thereof, and spring means for urging said trap cup to closed position over said exhaust tube.
13. The combination with a toilet reservoir and an air venting device, said device having a cuplike case containing an exhaust tube which is connected to a drain passageway of the toilet bowl, a case cover on said cuplike case open at the bottom and having a block on the upper end thereof, means connecting the toilet bowl to within the upper portion of said case cover for drawing air from the bowl, a trap cup within said cuplike case extending over said exhaust tube in movable relation to said case, said block having a passageway aligned with said exhaust tube containing means for connection to a water supply conduit, a valve stem within said passageway having means engageable with a valve seat in said passageway, an aspirating head on the end of the stem movable into the discharge end of the passageway when the valve stern is raised, means for moving said trap cup away from the end of said exhaust tube, antisiphoning means on said case cover which is rendered inoperative when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, means for moving said trap cup, said means for moving said trap cup embodying a cylinder in said block means, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup, said block containing a passageway from said water supply passageway to the top of said cylinder, said connection of the piston rod to said trap cup embodying a lever pivoted interjacent its ends and connected to said piston rod and to said trap cup at opposite ends thereof, and spring means for urging said trap cup to closed position over said exhaust tube, said exhaust tube having a restricted upper end for producing a venturi effect when the water from about said aspirating head from the exhaust passageway is directed therethrough.
14. The combination with a toilet reservoir and an air venting device, said device having a cuplike case containing an exhaust tube which is connected to a drain passageway of the toilet bowl, a case cover on said cuplike case open at the bottom and having a block on the` upper end thereof, means connecting the toilet bowl to within the upper portion of said case cover for drawing air from the bowl, a trap cup within said cuplike case extending over said exhaust tube in movable relation to said case, said block having a passageway aligned with said exhaust tube containing means for connection to a water supply conduit, a valve stem within said passageway having means engageable with a valve seat in said passageway, an aspirating head on the end of the stem movable into the discharge end of the passageway when the valve stem is raised, means for moving said trap cup away from the end of said exhaust tube, antisiphoning means on said case cover which is rendered inoperative when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, means for moving said trap cup, said means for moving said trap cup embodying a cylinder in said block means, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup, said block containing a passageway from said water supply passageway to the top of said cylinder, said connection of the piston rod to said tran cup embodying a lever pivoted interjacent its ends and connected to said piston rod and to said trap cup at opposite ends thereof, spring means for urging said trap cup to closed position over said exhaust tube, said exhaust tube having a restricted upper end for producing a venturi eiect when the water from about said aspirating head from the exhaust passageway is directed therethrough, link means for raising said valve stem and providing a force of water for cleaning the passageways and the aspirating head and for producing a back pressure when the head is within the discharge end of the passageway for providing a flow of water to said piston for moving it downwardly into the cylinder and opening said trap cup, means for retaining said operating links in valve stem raised position, means for flushing said toilet, and trip means on said flush means for releasing said operating links to permit the valve stern to move downwardly to valve seated position.
15. The combination with a toilet reservoir and an air venting device, said device having a cup-like case containing an exhaust tube which is connected to a drain passageway of the toilet bowl, a case cover on said cuplike case open at the bottom and having a block on the upper end thereof, means connecting the toilet bowl to within the upper portion of said case cover for drawing air from the bowl, a trap cup within said cup-like case extending over said exhaust tube in movable relation to said case, said block having a passageway aligned with said exhaust tube containing means for connection to a water supply conduit, a valve stern within said passageway having means engageable with a valve seat in said passageway, an aspirating head on the end or the stern movable into the discharge end of the passageway when the valve stem is raised, means for moving said trap cup away from the end of said exhaust tube, antisiphoning means on said case cover which is rendered inoperative when said trap cup is moved from said exhaust tube, means for moving said trap cup, said means for moving said trap cup embodying a cylinder in said block means, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup, said block containing a passageway from said water supply passageway to the top of said cylinder, said connection of the piston rod to said trap cup embodying a lever pivoted interjacent its ends and connected to said piston rod and to said trap cup at opposite ends thereof, spring means for urging said trap cup to closed position over said exhaust tube, said exhaust tube having a restricted upper end for producing a venturi eilect when the water from about said aspirating head from the exhaust passageway is directed therethrough, and link means for raising said valve stem and providing a force or water for cleaning the passageways and the aspirating head and for producing a back pressure when the head is within the discharge end of the passageway for providing a flow of water to said piston for moving it downwardly into the cylinder and opening said trap cup, said antisiphoning means embodying an aperture in the case cover, and valve means moved by said trap cup for closing said aperture.
16. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cup-like case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening through the bottom of the case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover secured to said cup-like case open at the bottom below the top of said cup-like case, and antisiphoning means on said case cover.
17. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cup-like case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover open at the bottom below the top of said cup-like case, a boss on said case cover containing a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, and a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup.
18. in an air venting device, an upwarly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case cover open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, a boss on said case cover containing a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rodconnecting said piston to said trap cup, said boss having a water intake passageway, a valve stern in said boss sealing said intake passageway, said boss having a passageway to said cylinder and a nozzle passageway connected to said intake passageway, the nozzle passageway being aligned with the end of said ex- 'l i haust tube in a manner to have the end of said valve stem produce a jet spray from said nozzle passageway, and means for retracting said valve stem and moving the end thereof to a position relative to said nozzle passage- 'way to produce said jet spray.
19. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, a case co-ver open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case, a boss on said case cover containing a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connecting said pistonY to said trap cup, said boss having a water intake passageway, a valve stern in said boss, said boss having a passageway to said cylinder and a nozzle passageway connected to said intake passageway, the nozzle passageway being aligned with the endV of said exhaust tube, means for retracting said valve stem to a position to produce a jet spray from said nozzle passageway, and means for operating said valve stem to retracted position and for retaining the intake passageway open, said air venting device being mounted within a reservoir of water with the bottom of the case cover extending thereinto to provide a seal for the interior thereof and for an orifice from which air is to be drawn by the jet spray when directed into the exhaust tube due to the low pressure area produced thereby in the upper portion of the case cover.
20. In an air venting device, an upwardly presenting cuplike case, an exhaust tube extending upwardly within said case having an opening below said case, a trap cup extending over said exhaust tube into said case to produce a seal therewith when the case has water therewithin, means supporting said trap cup for movement to and from said exhaust tube, and a case cover open at the bottom below the top of said cuplike case secured thereto, the upperend of said exhaust tube having a restricted area to produce a venturi effect when Water passes therethrough.

The combination with a toilet reservoir and ant-air venting device, said device having a cuplike case containing an exhaust tube which is connected Ito a drain passageway o the toilet bowl, a case cover on said cuplike case open at `the bottom and having a block on the upper end thereof, means connecting the toilet bowl to within lthe upper portion of said case cover for drawing air from the bowl, a trap cup within said cuplike case extending over said exhaust tube in movable relation to said case, said block having a passageway aligned with said exhaust tube containing means for connection to a Water supply conduit', a valve stem within said passageway producing a jet spray of water from said aligned passageway, and means for moving said trap cup away from the end of -said exhaust tube.
22. The combination with a toilet reservoir and an air venting device, said device having a cuplike case containing an exhaust tube which is connected to a drain passageway or" `the toilet bowl, a case cover on said cuplike case open at the bottom and having a block on the upper end thereof, measn connecting the toilet bowl to within the upper portion of said case cover for drawing air from lthe bowl, a trap cup within said cuplike case extending over said exhaust tube in movable relation `to said case, said block having a passageway aligned with said exhaust tube containing means for connection to a water supply conduit, a valve stem within said passageway producing -a jet spray of water from said aligned passageway, means for moving said trap cup away from the end of said exhaust tube, said means for moving said trap cup embodying a cylinder in said block means, a piston in said cylinder, and a piston rod connecting said piston to said trap cup, said block containing a passageway from said water supply passageway to the top of said cylinder.
23. In a water closet, including .a toilet bowl having a drain outlet, a tank containing water and an overflow pipe leading `to an outlet for release of Water from said tank into the bowl, a vertical tube mounted within said tank, the tube extending upwardly above the level of water therein and downwardly from said tank to said drain outlet, an open cup encircling said tube below said water level, and being filled with water, a housing mounted on said tube, the housing having side walls and a top wall in a spaced relation to the top of the tube and the top of the overflow pipe, 4a hood tting over the tcp of said tube, the hood having an open lower end normally immersed in the water within the cup, a lever secured to the hood to uncover lthe upper end of ythe tube, a trst pipe leading into the interior of the tank for admission of water thereinto, a cylinder supported by the housing, a piston movable within :the cylinder md connected to the lever to raise said hood, a second pipe leading from the lirst named pipe to :the cylinder lto a valve in said second pipe for admission of water under pressure to said cylinder -to operate said piston, means controlled by said piston to release water in a spray into the housing over the top of4 the tube, and manual means to alternately open and to close said valve.
24. ln ya water closet, including a toilet bowl having a drain outlet, a tank containing water and an overflow pipe leading to an outlet for release of water from said tank into the bowl, a vertical tube mounted within said tank, the tube extending upwardly above the level of water therein and downwardly from said tank to said drain outlet, an open cup encircling said tube below said water level, and being filled with water, a housing mounted on `said tube, Ithe housing having -side walls and a top wall in spaced relation 'to the top of the overflow pipe, a hood iitting over the top of said tube, Ithe hood having an open lower end normally immersed in the water within the cup,
" a lever fulcrumed within the housing upon a stationary support'and secured vto the hood, a lirst pipe leading into .the interior of the tank for admission of water thereunto, a second pipe connected to said rst pipe, a valve in second pipe, means connected to said second pipe and responsive -to ythe pressure of water conveyed thereby to operate the lever and thereby to raise the hood to open the top of said tube, means to release water from said second pipe in a spray over the open end of said tube, and manual means to alternately open and close said valve.
25. ln a Water closet including a toilet bowl, having a drain outlet, a .tank containing water and an overow pipe opening at its lower end by intermediate means into the interior of the toilet bowl, 'the upper end of the overflow pipe 'terminating above the normal level of water within said tank, a vertical tube mounted within said tank, the tube extending upwardly labove said water level and downwardly ythrough the bottom o the tank for connection to said drain outlet, an open cup `encircling said tube within the tank below 'said water level, said cup being always lled with water, a housing within said tank, the housing including a top spaced from the upper ends of the said ltube and the overflow pipe, and side walls, the lower por-tions of which are immersed in the water within said tank, a hood litting over the top of said tube, said hood having an open lower end normally immersed in the water within said cup, a two arm lever fulcr-umed within the housing upon a stationary support, one of rthe arms being connected Ito the hood, a cylinder supported by the housing, a movable piston within the cylinder, the piston having a piston rod connected to the other arm of the lever, a first pipe leading into the interior of the tank for admission of water thereinto, a second pipe leading from said first named pipe to one end of the cylinder, valve means in the second pipe lto admit water under pressure to said cylinder lto move the piston therein and to actuate thereby the lever to raise ythe hood from the top of the tube, means connected by intermediate members to release water supplied by said second pipe in the form of a spray into the interior of the housing While said hood is in a raised position, and manual means to alternately open and close said valve.
26. In a water closet, including a toilet bowl having a drain outlet, a water tank containing water and including an overflow pipe opening at its lower end into duct means leading to the interior of the bowl, a vertical tube mounted within said tank, the tube extending upwardly above the normal water level therein and extending at its lower end downwardly from said tank into said drain outlet, a housing within the tank in a position to enclose from above the upper end of the over-flow pipe and said tube, the housing being open from below but including side walls extending downwardly below said water level, an open cup encircling the tube within said housing but below said water level and being always lled with water, said cup being connected to the walls of the housing and serving -as a means of supporting said housing within the tank, a
hood tting over the top of the overow pipe, the hood having an open lower end normally immersed in the water within the cup, a lever secured to the hood to uncover the upper end of the tube, a iirst pipe leading into the interior of the tank for admission thereinto of water under pressure, a cylinder supported by the housing, a piston movable within the cylinder and connected -to a rod extending out of the cylinder and connected to the lever to raise the hood to uncover the top of said tube, a second pipe connected to the first pipe and leading to ythe cylinder, a valve in said second pipe for ladmission of water to said cylinder to operate the piston, means connected to said second pipe lto release water in a spray into the housing while the open end of the tube is uncovered by said hood, and manual means to lalternately open and close said valve.

IN AN AIR VENTING DEVICE, AN UPWARDLY PRESENTING CUPLIKE CASE, AN EXHAUST TUBE EXTENDING UPWARDLY WITHIN SAID CASE HAVING AN OPENING THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE CASE, A TRAP CUP EXTENDING OVER SAID EXHAUST TUBE INTO SAID CASE TO PRODUCE A SEAL THEREWITH WHEN THE CASE HAS WATER THEREWITHIN, MEANS SUPPORTING SAID TRAP CUP FOR MOVEMENT TO AND FROM SAID EXHAUST TUBE, A CASE COVER SECURED TO SAID CUPLIKE CASE OPEN AT THE BOTTOM BELOW THE TOP OF SAID CUPLIKE CASE, SAID CASE COVER HAVING AN OPENING ABOVE THE BOTTOM THEREOF, AND MEANS CLOSING SAID OPENING WHEN SAID TRAP CUP IS MOVED FROM SAID EXHAUST TUBE.
