declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a water closet.
The object of the present invention s to improve the construction of water closets, more especially the flush tank thereof, and to provide a simple, practical and efficient construction which will be strong and durable and which will afford both a mechanical and a water seal for the bowl.
VViththese and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to with out departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a flush tank provided at the top with an inlet 2 designed to be connected with any suitable water supply. The water closet of the present invention is especially adapted for use on railroad trains and other conveyances, but it may be advantageously employed wherever an efficient water closet of this character is desired.
partition 3 into upper and lower compart= ments 4 and 5, the upper compartment constituting a water compartment and adapted to hold a sufficient quantity of water to flush the bowl 6 with which the flush tank is connected. The upper compartment 4 is provided in its bottom with an opening 7 and the partition 3, which constitutes the bottom of the upper compartment 4, is beveled around the opening to form a valve seat with which cooperatesv a valve disk 8. The valve disk 8 is carried by a stem 9 operating in upper and lower guides 10 and 11 and also carrying a lower valve disk 12 which cooperates with a valve seat 13 of an outlet opening in the bottom of the lower compartment 5 of the flush tank. The flush tank is connected at the outlet opening and valve seat 13 with the bowl by a discharge pipe 14 and this discharge or outlet pipe 14 communicates with an annular space or passage 15 located within the upper portion of the wall of the bowl 6 which is also provided with interiorly arranged discharge openings 16 arranged at intervals around the entire bowl and adapted to permit the water from the flush tank to flow into the bowl at spaced points entirely around the same so that the bowl will be thoroughly washed at each flushing of the same.
The flush tank is also equipped with an overflow pipe 17 extending through the bottom of the lower compartment of the flush tank and projecting upward into the'lower compartment 5 a sufficient distance to enable the said lower compartment to hold a sufiicient quantity of water when the valve disk 12 is closed to form a water seal within the bowl. The overflow pipe is connected at the lower end at 18 with the outlet pipe 14 below the union or coupling 19 which connect-s the outlet pipe with the flush tank and which is of sufficient size to provide a valve chamber for the lower valve disk 12. The flush tank is also equipped with a vent tube or pipe 20, which is designed to extend through the roof. is mounted in the upper portion of the flush tank and has its lower and piercing the horizontal partition 3. The
pipe or tube 20 extends upwardly from the partition 3 through the top of the flush tank and is then continued up to the desired point and it forms a vent for venting the bowl as it is in direct communication with the same when the parts are in their normal position i and the upper valve disk 8 is closed and the lower valve disk 12 is open.
The bowl is provided with an outlet passage 21 leading from an outlet 22 which is provided with a valve seat and with which cooperates a plunger valve 23 movable horizontally and having a horizontal stem 2i extending through the rear wall of the passage 21. The rear wall of the passage 21 is provided with a suitable bearingwhieh is in the form of a sleeve 25 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the d 'awings. The sleeve is provided with an interiorly arranged flange or collar 26 and has an exteriorlv arranged nut 27 which secures the sleeve in position and which also fastens a bearing bracket 28 to the outer end of the sleeve. A coiled spring 29 is interposed between the. fixed flange or collar 26 and the head or valve 23 of the plunger and it is adapted to urge the plunger valve to its closed position when the same is free to move.
The bearing bracket 28 supports an operating lever comprising a horizontal shaft or pivot 30 mounted in a bearing opening 31 of the bracket 28 and carrying an operating handle or arm 32, a plunger valve operating arm and a valve. stem operating arm 34. The arms are suitably fixed to the shaft or pivot 30 and the said arm 33 extends upwardly therefrom and projects into and through a slot of the rear end of the stem 24 ofthe plunger. The plunger stem 2l projects in rear of the passage and the operating arm is extended upwardly and forwardly at an inclination and has a horizontal terminal portion and terminates in a forwardly extending horizontally disposed handle or grip portion 36 which is normally arranged in a horizontal position a short distance below the top of the bowl. The arm 3-1, which is connected with the valve stem, extends upwardly and rearwardlv at an in clination and its outer end is movably connected with the lower end of a vertically disposed operating rod 37 which is similarly connected at its upper end to an exterior arm 38 of a rock shaft 39 extending horizontally across the lower chamber .3 of the Hush tank and provided with an interiorlv arranged arm 40 located adjacent to the valve stem 9. The valve stem 9 is provided with a horizontal flange or collar 41 and the engaging end 42 ot' the arm 40 is rounded to form a head to bear against the said collar or flange 4:1 and enable the valve stem to be readily lifted with a minimum amount of wear. The
valve stem 9 is urged downwardly by a coiled spring 43 interposed between the upper guide 10 and the upper valve disk 8 and adapted to seat the latter when the valve stem is free to move. When the operating arm or handle of the shaft 30 is swung upwardly, the shaft or pivot 30 will be rocked moving the. arm 33 rearwardly or outwardly and opening the plunger valve 23. This movement also swings the arm 3-.l downwardly carrying with it the upper exteriorly arranged arm 38 of the shaft 39, and the arm 40, which extends in the opposite direction from the shaft 39 from the said arm 38, is swung upwardly to lift the valve stem 9. This opens the upper valve and closes the lower valve. The water from the upper compartment will flow into the lower compartment and after filling the same to the height of the upper end of the overflow pipe 11 will flow out of the latter and through the outlet pipe 1% to the bowl and wash the same. lVhen the operating lever is returned to its normal position, the plunger valve will 'be closed and the stem 9, which will move downward, under the influence of the coiled spring l3, will close the upper valve disk 8 and open the lower valve disk 12. This will permit the water contained in the lower portion of the lower chamber 5 to flow through the discharge or outlet pipe 14 into the bowl, thereby providing a water seal as well as a mechanical seal for the said bowl. The arms 38 and 4:2 and the connecting shafts or pivots 39 form a lever for actuating the valve stem and the said lever is journaled in suitable bearings, a suitable stufiing box 44 be ing provided at the outer end of the shaft 39. The inner end of the shaft is arranged in a bearing 45 and does not pierce the continuous wall of the flush tank.
The bowl is provided with a seat 46 and a cover 17 hinged at the back, as shown, and of the ordinary construction. The bearing bracket 28 of the bowl, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, is approximately U- shaped and each side is provided with a bearing opening 31 for the horizontal shaft or pivot 30 of the operating lever.
The bowl is mechanically sealed to prevent water from splashing out of the tra and the construction is such that the fumes are permitted to rise through the bowland pass out through the vent pipe or tube or the flush tank. This construction renders the water. closet of special advantage for use on cars and various other conveyances.
lVhen the parts are in their normal position, that is when the upper valve and the plunger valve are closed, the vent tube or pipe comnmnicates with the bowl through both the lower valve and the overflow pipe.
\Vhat is claimed is:
l. The combination with a bowl having an outlet, a plunger valve normally closing the outlet, a flush tank having upper and lower compartments, an outlet pipe connecting the lower compartment with the bowl, 'upper and lower valves controlling the flow of water from the upper compartment to the lower compartment and from the lower compartment to the oulet pipe, an overflow pipe connected to the outlet pipe and lower compartment and operating mechanism c nnected with the plunger valve and with the said upper and lower valves to open the plunger valve and the upper valve and close the lower valve simultane-- partment to the outlet pipe, an overflow pipe extending into and projecting above the bottom of the lower compartment of theflush tank and connected with the said outlet pipe, and mechanism connected with the plunger valve and the upper and lower valves for opening the plunger valve and the upper valve and closing thelower valve simultaneously for flushing the bowl and for closing the lunger valve and the upper valve and openlng the lower valve after the bowl has been flushed.

The combination with a bowl having an outlet, a plunger valve normally closing the outlet, a flush tank having upper and lower compartments, an outlet pipe connecting the lower compartment with the bowl, upper and lower valves controlling the flow of water from the upper compartment to the lower compartment and from the lower compartn out to the outlet pipe, an overflow pipe extending into and projecting above the bottom of the lower compartment of the flush tank and connected with the said outlet pipe, a stem connecting the said upper and lower valves, a lever arranged to lift the stem, and an operating lever connected with the said lever and provided also with an arm connected vwith the plunger valve. 4. The combination with a bowl having an outlet, a plunger valve normally closing the outlet, a flush tank having .upper and lower compartments, an outlet pipe connecting the lower compartment with the bowl. Upper and lower valves controlling the flow of water from the upper compartment to the lower compartment and from the lower compartment to the outlet pipe, an overflow pipe extending into and projecting above the bottom of the lower compartment of the flush tank and connected with the said outlet pipe, a stem connecting the upper and lower valves, a spring for urging the valves downwardly, a lever arranged to move the stem upwardly against the action of the said spring, a separate spring for urging the plunger valve to its closed position, and an operating lever having an' arm connected with theplunger valve, said operating lever being also provided with an arm connected with the first mentioned lever for actuating the same to lift the stem.
5. In combination, a closet bowl having a movable plunger, a flushing tank having an upper and lower water compartment provided with outlets, a discharge pipe connecting the bowl with the lower water compartment of the flushing tank, valves for closing the outlet openings of each of the water compartments, and means for opening the plunger of the bowl closing the communication between the bowl and lower water compartment and establishing a communication between the upper and lower water compartments to permit the lower compartment to be filled with water, said means adapted to be actuated to close the communication between the upper and lower compartments and reseat the plunger of the bowl and open the communication between the lower compartment and bowl to provide a water seal.
6. In combination, a bowl having a horizontal movable plunger, a flushing tank having upper and lower water compart ments, each having an outlet opening, an overflow pipe located in the lower com artment, a discharge pipe connectin the owl with the lower compartment an overflow, valves for closing the communication between the upper and lower compartments and lower compartment and discharge pipe, and means actuating the plunger and valves to establish a communication between the upper and lower compartments to permit the water to pass through the overflow into the bowl and out through its opening which is normally closed by its plunger, and by the reversing of the said means the valve between the discharge pipe and lower compartment will be opened establishing a communication between the dischargepipe and lower compartment, reseating the plunger and permitting the excess water in the lower compartment to form a water seal in the bowl.
