To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, Gnnniino COl-INEN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in Hobokcn. county of Hudson, Xew Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful lmpr vement in Flushing Apparatus;
I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it itjuflfllilllllw to make and use tne same, referencc bcing had. to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.-
My invention relates to water-closet systems and it has for its object to provide an improved simple, reliable and generally sub stantial flushing apparatus for such systems whereby the closet is normally tree of water and only contains water at the periodsbf its use, so that it is proof against freezing and may therefore be disposed in ou/t-ofdoor or other more or less exposed places.
I have fully illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawing, wherein the apparatus is shown in general in section, certain parts appearing, however, inside elevation. 1

The guide 8 is formed with a bracket 1 in which is fulcrumed a lever 2 which is attached'to the upper end of the spindle. To this lever is connected a link 3 which is in turn connected with a lever 4c fulcrumed in the iixed part of the hinge c and formed with two cam surfaces 5 and 6 respectively adapted to he engaged by the projections j and l of the seat and cover. The tank (Z is formed with a hole 7 through which projects the neck 8 of an upright tubular casing 9 arranged in the tank and secured therein by a nut 10 screwed on its neck and clumping it to the bottom of the tank; said nut terms a union between the pipe in and the casing t). In the casing l) is arranged to move vertically a float 11 having a stem l2 which projects through the top of the casing and is connected with the usual tubular valve 13, which controls the discharge from the tank by way of the pipe 0, by means of the lever '14, tnlcrunied at 15. The float approximately, though not perfectly, tits the casing 8 so that while the easing atl'ords a guide therelor in its vertical movements water can pass the lloat in order to find its way out of the casing by the discharge n zzle ll which is attached to the casing near the top thereof. The nozzle is formed with a'b'racket 17 serving as a ful-' crum for the stem of the lever 18 which carries the ball-float 19 and is adapted to control the discharge of water from the nozzle, shutting oh the flow when the water raises the float to a certain elevation and permitting its escape when the tank is empty and the float is down, all according to a construction and operation well-known in the art.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows Normally the tank is empty, as is also the pipe m which has an outlet to the sewer by way of the port because at this time, the seat being unoccupied and not raised to its full-back position, the spring a holds the spindle t down so that the reduced it moves lever 14 and so depresses the tubu-' lar valve 13, saidvalve closing the escape from the tank by way of the flush-pipe 0, so
that-the water begins to fill the tank; when the tank is full, the ball-float rises and, by means of its stem 18-, cuts off the discharge of water into the tank. I Upoii the seat being now released and allowed to assume-its normal position, the spring 41 re-seats valve a,
cutting oft the supply of water to the tank.
At the same time, the spindle t opens the way to the sewer through the opening y for so much of the water as remains in the pipe on and the casing 9, allowing the float 11 to fall and so effect the raising ofthe valve 13; this starts the flushing operation and results in emptying the. tank and the pipe 0 of all water contained therein. The
apparatusmow stands in' its normal condi-" tion, free of all water.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
Ina water-closet, the combination of a valve casing, av normally closed valve controlling the flow therethrough, a bowl, a
seat and its hinge-member, a cover for the seat and ahinge-memloer for the cover, said hinge-members having oppositely extending projections and means, comprising a lever having one arm projecting into the path of movement of each projection, for operating said valve to open the same, substantially as described.
