A sanitary closet comprises a sanitary pan arranged over a tank for containing disinfectant liquid the tank being provided with a normally closed outlet, a chamber extending downwardly into the tank and in communication with the tank by way of a filter screen, a manually operable lift pump having a plunger movable within a barrel opening into and housed within the chamber, the plunger being provided with valve means which allow liquid to pass the plunger on the downstroke but not on the upstroke, the pump serving for withdrawing liquid from the chamber to flush the sanitary pan and simultaneously for drawing liquid into the chamber through the filter screen, and overflow means leading from the upper part of the chamber directly to the outlet. Part of the tank 6 is divided off by filter screen 17, 18 to form a pump chamber 8. The lower location of the filter screen may be by an extension 30, inside the tank, of the outlet socket. A flexible overflow pipe 32 opens at the top of chamber 8 and leads out through a hole 31 in the outlet socket. The upper section of the screen 17 is removable by handles 19. The sanitary pan may be an earthenware pedestal 1 with a syphon type outlet 5 discharging into the tank, or of the washdown variety and fitted to the tap of the tank which serves as a pedestal.
