3 Claims. (Cl. 4-57) The present invention relates to flush valves and has for its main object the general improvement of a iiush valve.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of etlicient and positive guiding means of guiding the ilush valve towards its seat when the llush box has been emptied.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision in connection with a valve body of a guiding means therefor operable by virtue of suction for assuring gentle seating of the valve upon the discharge pipe and thereby eliminating jarring of the parts or faulty operation thereof.
With the above general objects in View and others that will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully decribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this application, and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross sectional view, partly in elevation, through the flush box, showing the valve and valve-operating mechanism in elevation, with the valve in its operative position with the flush pipe; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view on a vertical plane through the valve and the means for guiding its shifting movement in a vertical direction.
Referring in detail to the present drawing there is shown therein ilush box which includes a removable lid 11. Flush pipe 12 has its upper end spaced from the bottom of iiush box 10 by virtue of an interposed washer 13. The lower end of said flush pipe 12 connects with the interior of a toilet bowl in the usual manner.
A valve-seating pipe 14 is passed through the bottom of said ush box 10 and is provided with a circumferential ilange 15 which rests upon and bears against the upper face of the bottom of said flush box 10. The lower end of said valve-seating pipe 14 is externally threaded to be threadedly engaged by the upper end of said tiush pipe 12, as at 16. By virtue of this arrangement the portion of the bottom of said ilush box 10 adjacent the opening through which said valve-seating pipe 14 is passed, is clamped between said washer 13 and ange 15, thereby maintaining the upper end of said flush pipe 12 and said valve-seating pipe 14 in a rigid relative position with the bottom of said flush box 10.
Integrally formed with said ange 15 is a hollowed extension 17 in communication with passage 18 made in flange 15. The outer end of said extension 17 is directed vertically to define an internally threaded mouth 19 with which overow pipe 20 by its lower end is threadedly engaged. Any excess of water in llush box 10 will drain through the upper end of overow pipe 20, extension 17, passage 18, into valve-seating pipe 14.
Adjustable in a vertical direction by the medium of thumb screw 21 uponA saidy overflow' pipe 20 is collar 22 rigidly supporting thereon horizontal arm 23. Depending downwardly from the outer end of said arm 23 is a valve-guiding rod 24, which remains in an axial relation with said valve-seating pipe 14. The lower end of said rod 24 enters said valve-seating pipe 14 approximately to one-half of the length of the latter, and substantially in alinement with the' bottom of said iish` box- 1t).
The valve includes a hollow body 25 of a vertically oblong formation, having each end thereof tapered of substantially conical appearance. Extended in an axial relation with saidv valve body 25 is a` tubular member 26 which is provided ateits upper end with ange 27, the latter being embedded Within the upper end of said valve body 25. By virtue of this arrangement said tubular member 26 and said valve body 25 are capable of bodily shifting motion in a vertical direction.
The lower end of said tubular member 26 is sealed as at 28.
The lower end of valve body 25 is provided with mouth 29, the body portion of said valve body 25 adjacent said mouth 29 being in a spaced relation with said tubular member 26.
Rigidly formed with said flange 27 is eye 30 with which the lower end of chain 31 is connected. 'Dhe upper end of said chain 31 connects with the outer end of bar 32. The opposite end of said bar 32 is rigidly connected with pin 33, the latter extending through the side wall of flush box 10 and is there engaged by operating handle 34.
The means for filling ush box 10 with water are well known in the art and are therefore not shown in the drawing. Normally when the tank is filled with water the lower end of valve body 25 is seated within the upper end of valve-seating pipe 14, thereby preventing the escape of water through said pipe. When it is desired to iiush the toilet bowl, the handle 34 is angularly shifted in a downward direction for causing angular shifting movement of bar 32 in an upward direction for exerting a pull upon chain 31 in the same direction. The chain in turn pulls valve body 25 in an upward direction. This action in turn causes upright shifting movement of tubular member 26 upon rod 24. By virtue of the action described the valve-seating pipe 14 will become open for permitting the escape of water from flush box 10 into the flush pipe 12. When the water gradually escapes from liush box 10 the surface of water will gradually come down with valve body 25 floating upon the surface of the water to eventually drop into the upper end of valveseating pipe 14 by the lower end of said valve body 25.
From the hereinabove described construction and operation it will be readily seen that the shifting movement of the valve vertically in either direction is positive due to the guiding of the tubular member 26 by said rod 24, thereby insuring the seating of the valve within pipe 14 at all times whenever the valve cornes to the operative position, and without possibility of any faulty seating and a consequent leakage.
While there is described herein preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
l. In a ush box including a bottom wall and an outlet pipe supported thereby, a rod supported in a vertical axial relation with said outlet pipe, a valve body, and a tubular member extending in a longitudinal co-axial relation with said valve body, said rod entering said tubular member through the upper open end of the latter for guiding said valve body in its vertical shifting movement along said rod to or away from the mouth of said outbody, a tubular member extending in a longitudinal coaxial relation with said valve body, the upper end of said tubular member terminating with the upper end of K said valve body, the lower` end of said tubular member extending past the lower end of said valve body, said rod entering said tubular member through the upper open end of the latter for guiding said valve body in its vertical shifting movement along said rod to or away from the month of said outlet pipe, and a seal closing the lower end of said tubular member.
3. In a flush box including a bottom wall and an outlet pipe supported thereby, a rod supported in a vertical axial relation with said outlet pipe, a valve body, a tubular member extending through the valve body and downwardly below the lower end thereof with the lower end of said tubular member sealed, a flange secured rigidly to the upper end of the tubular member and to the valve body, said tubular member being sleeved over the lower end of the rod and with the sealed end below said rod, and means connected with the flange for lifting the valve body from the outlet pipe.
