BY Wyn/y 8m United States Patent TOILET FLUSH TANK Floyd Mal-cum, Wallowa, Oreg.
Application February 11,1955, Serial No. 487,509
2 Claims. (Cl. 4-57) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in toilet flush tanks and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising a novel combination and arrangement of valves whereby either a full or partial flush may be had, as desired.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a flush tank of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, durable, compact, highly efficient and reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These, together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent, reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numberals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view principally in vertical section through a flush tank constructed in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 5 designates a tank of suitable material and capacity for the reception of water, as at 6. The tank 5 is provided with the usual water supply pipe. Depending from the bottom 8 of the tank 5 is a drain or outlet 9 to be connected in the usual manner with a toilet bowl. An overflow pipe 10 communicates with the outlet 9.
Mounted on the lower end portion of the overflow pipe 10 and also communicating with the outlet 9 is a pair of coplanar valve seats 11 and 12. Mounted on the overflow pipe 10 at an intermediate point is a pair of guides 13 and 14.
The stem 15 of a full flush bulb valve 16 is operable in the guide 13. A full flush operating mechanism designated generally by reference character 17 is operatively connected to the stem 15 by means comprising a link 13.
The stem 19 of a partial flush bulb valve 20 is slidable in the guide 14. A partial flush operating mechanism designated generally by reference character 23, which is substantially similar to the mechanism 17 and mounted on the opposite end portion of the tank 5, is operatively connected to the valve stem 19 by means comprising a link 21. A float 22 is adjustably secured on the stem 19 above the guide 14.
It is thought that the operation of the flush tank will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when a complete or full flush is desired, the valve 16 is lifted from its seat 11 in the usual manner by the mechanism 17 and the tank 5 is substantially emptied. When a partial flush is desired, the valve 20 is lifted from its seat 12 by the mechanism 23. When this occurs the water flows from the tank in an obvious manner. During the initial discharge of the water, the float 22 assists in supporting the partial flush valve 20 in raised or open position. However, when the falling water level in the tank 5 reaches the float 22, said float follows it downwardly and the weight of said float is sufiicient to close the valve 20 while the tank is still approximately half full.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. In combination, a toilet flush tank having an outlet, a pair of coplanar valve seats communicating with the outlet, a full flush valve engageable with one of the seats, a partial flush valve engageable with the other of said seats, said partial flush valve including a vertically slidable stem, a float mounted on said stem, and means for independently opening the valves.
2. In combination, a toilet flush tank having an outlet, a vertical overflow pipe in the tank communicating with the outlet, a pair of coplanar valve seats on the overflow pipe communicating with the outlet, a pair of guides mounted on said overflow pipe, a full flush valve engageable with one of the seats and including an upstanding stem slidable in one of the guides, means for opening said full flush valve, a partial flush valve engageable with the other seat and including an upstanding stem slidable in the other guide, a float mounted on the second-named stem, and means for opening said partial flush valve.
