Description
TOILET TANK OUTLET FITTING AND ELBOW Filed NOV. 4, 1942 JEZSSG C. OWE/KS. 5y flr-r).
Patented Apr. 3, 1945 TOILET TANK OUTLET FITTING AND ELBOW Jesse C. Owens, Los Angeles, Calif. Application November 4, 1942, Serial No. 464,483
3 Claims.
My invention relates to an elbow and outlet fitting for toilet fiush tanks and has for its principal objects, to, generally improve uponand simplify the construction of the conventional as plastics, and further, to with simple means for impartfiushing function and at the same time tending materially to decrease the hissing and gurgling noises which usually attend the fiow of water from the tank to the toilet bowl.
A further object of my invention is, to provide a simple and efiective means for guiding the ball valve during its movements toward and away from its seat, such guiding means projecting from the upper end of the elbow, upwardly through the water discharge opening in the fitting and which arrangement eliminates the necessity for providing means anchored on the overflow tube or wall of the tank, for guiding the ball valve and the rod or stem carrying same.
With the .foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing i which:
Fig. 1 is a section taken vertically through the center of my improved elbow and fitting.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the member that is positioned in the upper end of the elbow and which serves to impart whirling motion to the water entering the elbow, also as the guide for ball valve.
Fig. 4 is a detail section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a practical embodi- The fitting, in order to costs and facilitate production is preferably The lower part includes a ring-shaped body I2, from which depends a, short tubular member l3,
- bottom of the tank.
the same projecting through opening I l in the This tubular member may be externally threaded for the reception of a nut M, or when the fitting is formed from plastic material, an externally threaded metal sleeve i5 is mounted on member l3, with the upper end of said sleeve embedded in ring l2.
A packing ring or gasket 16 is positioned between ring l2 and the upper face of the tank bottom [0 around the opening ll, tnus eliectively sealing the joint between the tank and member l3 when nut I4 is tightened against the underface of said bottom.
Formed integral with the upper portion of ring I2 is a short horizontally disposed arm ll having a shallow recess I8 in its upper face, said recess communicating with the opening through said ring.
The upper members of the fitting includesa ring-shaped member l9 which fits directly upon the upper face of ring I2 and projecting from the lower portion of said member I"! is a short horizontally disposed arm 20 which registers with and overlies arm II.
The outer end of arm 20 terminates in a vertically disposed collar 2|, in which is seated the lower end of a conventional toilet tank overflow tube 22.
The underface of arm H i recessed so as to register with the recess [8 in arm H.
The upper edge of ring [9 is chamfered to provide a seat 23 for a ball valve 24, preferably Positioned in the lower portion of tubular I3 is the upper end of a tubular elbow 29 and arranged on top of the upper end of said elbow ember is a, ring 30, and secured within same is the upper end of a spiral deflector 3|, of thin material which makes at least, one complete turn.
Suitably secured to the center of the upper edge of deflector 3| projecting finger 32, preferably composed of three thin webs disposed degrees apart. I
This finger which gradually tapers toward its upper end projects upwardly through aperture 21 into ball valve 24, and a small cross arm 23 onthe upper end of said finger provides a stop to limit the upward movement of the ball valve.
Seated in the lower end of elbow 29 is a spiral deflector 38 similar to deflector 3i and thus the water passing from the lower end of the elbow is caused to whirl, thereby increasing the flow of said water and atthe same time materially decreasing the noise of flow.
When the toilet tank trip lever is actuated to raise ball valve 24 from its seat the finger 32 serves to guide said valve and after the Water has discharged from the tank, the finger guides the ball on the return t its seat.
The spiral deflectors 3! and 38 impart whirling motion to the water entering and discharging from the elbow and which action exerts a pull on the water within the tank so as to bring about a quick discharge of said water and tends to silence the flow thereof.
Thus it will be seenrthat I have provided an outlet fitting and elbow for toilet flush tanks that is simple, strong and durable in structure, inexpensive of manufacture and very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved outlet fitting and elbow may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a toilet tank outlet fitting and elbow, the combination with a tank, of an outlet fitting in the bottom of said tank, said fitting provided with a valve seat, a valve normally resting upon said seat, an elbow connected to said fitting below said valve seat, a ring seated in said fittin above the upper end of said elbow, a spiral deflector secured to said ring and a valve guiding member projecting upwardly from said deflector through said valve seat.
2. The combination as set forth in claim 1, said valve being hollow and provided in its lower end with an aperture for the accommodation of said valve guiding member and a stop on the upper end of said guiding member for limiting the upwardmovement of said valve.
3. The combination with a toilet tank, of an outlet fitting therefor, a valve seat on the upper end of said fitting, a hollow valve adapted to rest on said seat and cut off flow of water through said fitting, there being an opening in the bottom of said valve, a spiral deflector fixed within the up per portion of said outlet-fitting for imparting whirling motion to the water entering and passing through said fitting and a valve guide projecting upward from said deflector and through i the opening in the bottom of said valve.
