404,473. Rotary pumps. ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE CHARLEROI, 91, Rue de l'Enseignement, Brussels. Feb. 8, 1933, No. 3857. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1932. [Class 110 (i).] In an arrangement for priming a centrifugal, helico-centrifugal, or screw pump, the suction pipe 18 is arranged as a siphon connected to the inlet 5, and a mixer 8 is placed at the end of the bye-pass 7 in the vicinity of the impeller 1. At starting, the pump and pipes are filled with water to the level of the point A at the top of the siphon and the pump is then rotated. The water passes up the delivery tube 4, through the bye-pass 7 and the mixer 8 so that a mixture of air and water then passes through the pump. The air passes upwards through the delivery tube 4 while the water passes again through the bye-pass 7 and the mixer 8. This action is repeated until all air is withdrawn from the pipe 18, and the flow of liquid in the delivery pipe 4 closes the valve 9 at the end of the byepass 7. The mixer may be a pipe bent in the direction of movement of the water, and it may have a cone in front of it so that the water strikes the point of the cone and is converted into spray. In the modification shown in Fig 8, the leakage water round the eye ring 21 of the impeller entrains air from the suction pipe, and the mixer 8 is omitted.
