Abstract
740,815. Centrifugal and screw pumps. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION (HOLDINGS), Ltd., and HARLOW, W. F. June 17, 1953 [May 28, 1952], No. 13595/52. Class 110(1) A priming device for a centrifugal or like pump 1 comprises a priming vessel 10 having an internal tube 13 with a tapering bore disposed in line with the inlet aperture 12 and outlet aperture 9 the largest and the smallest diameters of the bore being respectively greater ,and not greater than the diameter of the aperture 12, the tube 13 having its end of greater diameter adjacent the aperture 12 and being secured to a closure plate 11, and apertures being provided adjacent the end of greater diameter to permit withdrawal of air from the vessel 10 at commencement of pumping. Before operation of the pump, the vessel 10 is filled with liquid which flows into the pump. When the pump is started, it draws liquid from the vessel 10, and the air in the suction pipe 6 is drawn into the vessel. Eventually liquid from the pipe 6 enters the vessel 10 and passes through the tube 13 to the pump gradually entraining the air in the vessel through holes 14. When pumping ceases. a small-bore pipe 15 extending between the pipe 6 and the discharge pipe 16 breaks the vacuum in the pipe 6 and stops water from syphoning out of the vessel 10 thrcugh the pipe 6. The largest and smallest diameters of the bore of the tube 13 are respectively greater by 37 per cent and smaller by 18 per cent than the diameter of the aperture 12. According to the Provisional Specification, the pump may be of the screw type.
