Abstract

600,239. Valves. FAWCETT, H. W. May 17, 1946, No. 15029. [Class 135] [Also in Group II] In a centrifugal separator in which separated solids are discharged through an annular port 4, the port is closed during centrifuging by a continuous ring 5, Figs. 1 and 2, of rubber. The ring is withdrawn to the position shown on a reduction in speed by transversely curved springs 7. The springs 7 and clips 6 embracing the ring 5 are segmental and leave short portions of the ring uncovered. The assembly is positioned by the engagement of the tips of the springs 7 with recesses 11, 12 in the separator bowl 1, 2. In the form shown in Fig. 4, a broader rubber ring 13 has outwardly turned flanges 14 and is carried by a rigid ring 10. The rubber ring 13 is supported by rings 12, 15 cut into fingers by slots 17, 18. Under centrifugal force the rings flex transversely and the flanges 14 are pressed on to the walls of the separator bowl. In other forms, the ring is polygonal in form when at rest and takes up a circular form, so sealing the discharge port under centrifugal force.
