Abstract
711,695. Centrifugal separators. SHARPLES CORPORATION. Nov. 13, 1950 [Nov. 19, 1949], No. 27656/50. Class 23 [Also in Group XXVI] A dispersion such as whole milk, rubber latex, or fat in crude glue is separated into a more concentrated and a less concentrated dispersion in a centrifugal separator adapted for full-bowl operation and having a liner, the more concentrated dispersion being, discharged along an axial passage extending the length of the separator and the angular velocity of the discharging dispersion being greater than that of the separator so that clogging of the passage at low temperature is prevented. The separator shown is suitable for separating whole, milk at 40‹F., and has a liner comprising frustro-conical plates 10 having spacers 13 fixed to their upper surfaces. The upper plate 34 of the liner has radial ribs 34a which co-operate with the top of the separator to form passages for the skim milk which is finally discharged through an annular passage 38. The liner is held in the separator by members 14, a key 15 being provided to prevent relative rotation between liner and bowl. Whole milk supplied by a bore 2.9 to a chamber 3,1 passes through holes 21 in the liner, the lower 5-15 per cent. of the liner plates having slots 95 which prevent clogging of the liner by granular particles of milk. The cream passes from the liner to the axial discharge passage 18 which as shown is without obstructions although it may contain obstructions, which do not prevent relative angular movement between the cream and the separator. The cream is removed from the separator through a bore 25 having a diameter of ¢ - <SP>1</SP>/ 5 of the passage 18 which is 2 # in. diameter. In a modification Fig. 3, (not shown) three bars integral with the body of the separator engage slots on the inner edges of the liner, and a small passage on the axis of the separator permits granular particles to pass directly from the chamber 31 to the passage 18. The separator rotates at 6,000 r.p.m. and has an internal diameter of 14 in. and treats 6,000 Ibs. of milk per hour.
