To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'we, WARREN A. GREEN- LAW, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Melrose Highlands, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, and CHARLES F. RYAN, a citizen of the United Statesof America, and a resident of Beachmont, in the county of Suflolk and State. of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reduction-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reducing valves adapted to regulate the pressure of water, steam, air, or other fluid.
The'invention has for its object the simplification :of the construction of devices of this character and at the same time to produce a valve very sensitive in operation.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and operation of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinaftergiven.

In the drawings, 10 is the body portion or casing provided with an inlet opening 11 and; an outlet opening 12, these openings being separated; by a partition 13 having a cylindrical 'opening 14 extending there-.
through and surrounded by a conical valve seat 15 in the upper face of said partition let opening 12.. A valve 22 normally closes the opening 14 in the partition 13, this valve being elongated and extending into thechamber 19. The
upper end of the valve 22 and the piston 23 the fluid pressure admitted to the inlet opening is adapted to leak by the periphery of the valve 22 and piston 23 into the chamber 19.
The valve 22 is provided with a, downwardly extending stem 24 to the lower end of which is secured a reciprocating member 25 fitting the cylindrical chamber 21. The lower end of this chamber 21 is closed by a bottom cap or plug 26 while the upper end of the chamber communicates with the outlet opening 12 by meansof the passages 27. Threaded to the boss 18 is an annular cap member 28, the upper end of which fits over a flange 29 of a cap'plate 30 having a cylindrical hub 31, the upper end of which is provided with a plurality of peripheral teeth 32. Superimposed upon the upper end of the boss 18 is a cup-shaped member 33 having a hub extending downwardly into the chamber 19, this hub being provided with a plurality of radial passages 34 communicating at one end by means of the ports 35 with the The cup-shaped 'member 33 has a central port 38 communicating with the compart ment 36. and normally closed by the controlling valve. 39. The controlling valve 39 is retained to its seat by the spring 40 surrounding a hub 41 extending upwardly from the cup-shaped member 33, and bearing f against the plate 42secured to'the stem 43 of the valve39. The stem 433s provided with a. reduced portion opposite which is v the mouth of an intercommunicatmg passage 44, the opposite endof which commua chamber 21 nealf the bottom thereof.
.lnte posed'between the cupfshaped member 33 and the cap plate 30 is a diaphragm 45. Within a recess in the cap plate 30 and resting upon the diaphragm 45' is a button 46 forming the bottom seat for the adjusting spring 47 contained within the cylindrical hub 31 of said cap plate 30. The upper end of the adjusting spring 47 bears against a plate 48 forming a top seat for said spring. This plate 48 has an inwardly extending-hub through which extends a threaded member by which said plate is secured to the threaded adjusting member 49. This adjusting member 49 is provided with a flat-sided shank 50 having secured to its upper end a collar 51. Mounted upon the shank 50 and movable longitudinally thereof is a handle 52 provided with a groove engaging finger 53. When it is desired to adjust the tension of the spring 47 the handle 52 is raised along the flat-sided shank 50 until the finger 53 disengages the peripheral grooves 32. When the finger 53 has been thus disengaged the adjusting member 49 may be turned as desiredto secure the necessary tension for the spring 47. When the hand is removed from the handle 52 it will move downwardly on the shank 50 and when the finger 53 is directly opposite one of the peripheral grooves 32 it will enter said groove and lock the adjusting member from further rotation. When the end of the finger 53 comes into contact with the upper face of the cylindrical hub 31 the jarring of the valve will cause it to assume a position immediately over one of the grooves and then enter the same as before described. The collar 51 limits the outward movement of the handle 52 andthe plate 48 contacting with an internal shoulder on the upper end of the cylindrical hub 31- limits the outward .movement of the adjusting member 49. A
passage 54 extends from the outlet opening 12 to. the interior of the cup-shaped member 33 so that the under side of the diaphragm 45 is subjected at all times to the fluid pressure on the outlet side of the valve. In the operation of the valve the adjusting spring is set for the required fluid pressure desired and then is locked by the engagement of the finger 53 withone of the grooves 32. This adjustment of the spring 47 will force the diaphragm 45 downwardly into contact with the valvestem 43 and move the valve 39 from its seat. As the fluid pressure enters the inlet opening 11 it will pass around the loose fitting valve 22 and piston 23 into the chamber 19. 'This fluid pressure will pass through the ports 35 into the radial passages 34 and entering the port 38 will pass through the passage 44 into the bottom of the chamber 21, and acting upon the reciprocating member .25 will lift the valve 22 from its seat; thereby permitting the fluid pressure in the inlet venting further flow of the fluid pressure through the passage 44 into the chamber 21. The fluid pressure in the outlet opening will then through the ports 27, act upon the upper face of the reciprocating member 25 and return the valve 22 to its seat, this downward movement being assisted by the main valve spring 54. The member 25 is loosely fitted to the wall of the chamber 21 so that the fluid is permitted to gradually leak by said member during its downward movement. The valve will then remain closed until the fluid pressure on the outlet side of the valve has been reduced sufliciently to permit the valve 39 to be opened again. The flow of the fluid pressure from the inlet opening 11 into the chamber 19 will then cause the valve 22 to again be opened in the same manner as hereinbefore described.
- In order to prevent a too sudden lifting of the valve 22 from its seat, baflle plates 55 are provided projecting from each side of the inlet opening 11 and adjacent to said valve. These baifle plates prevent the fluid pressure as it passes through the opening 11 surrounding the valve 22 and lifting it too suddenly. As it is with the adjacent ends of j the two baffle plates slightly separated, the
fluid pressure first strikes the central portion of the valve 22 and gradually lifts the same from its seat, the full force of the fluid pressure in the inlet opening having no effect upon the valve until it has been raised above the top of said baflle plates.
This valve is very simply constructed and is very sensitive in its operation.
It is believed that the, operation and many advantages of this device will be fully apparent from the foregoing description.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a casing provided with inlet and outlet openings separated by apartition with a conically sealed port and havsaidchambers; a spring pressed valve normally closing said port and provided with a piston member 'looselyfitting one of said chambers; a reciprocating member fitted opening 11 to pass through the .opening 14 to the other chamber and Secured to and movable with said valve; a smaller spring means for controlling the opening of said smaller valve adapted to be influenced by.
the fluid pressure in said outlet opening.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing provided with inlet and outlet openings separated by a partition with a conically seated port and havingcylindrical chambers on opposite sides of said port and in axial alinement there- .with connected by an intercommunicating passage terminating at the outer ends of said chambers; a spring pressed valve normally closing said port and provided with a a piston member. loosely fitting one of said chambers; a reciprocating member fitted to the other chamber and secured to and movable with said valve; a removable member for closing the end of the first mentioned chamber and provided with a port communieating with said intercommunicating passage; a small valve carried by said member for normally closing said port; and adjustsaid small valve adapted to be influenced .by the fluid pressure in said outlet opening.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing provided with inlet and outlet openings separated by a partition with a conically seated port and having cylindrical chambers on opposite sides of said port and in axial alinement therewith connected by an intercommunicating passage terminating at the outer ends of said chambers; a. spring pressed valve normally closing said port and provided with a piston member loosely fitting one of said chambers; a reciprocating member fitted to the other chamber and secured to and movable with said valve; a removable member for closing the'end of the first mentioned chamber and-provided with'a port communicating with said intercommunicating passage; a small valve carried by said member; a spring also carried by said member for normally closing said small valve; a diaphragm superimposed upon said removable niember and under the influence of the fluid pressure in said outlet opening; a member threaded to said casing inclosing said removable member and diaphragm and having a cylindrical hub; a button resting on said diaphragm; a plug threaded to said hub; a revoluble supporting plate carried by said plug; and a spring interposed between said plate and button.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing provided with inletand outlet openings separated by a partition with a conically seated port and having cylindrical chambers on opposite sides of said port and in axial alinement therewith connected by an intercommunicating passage terminating at theouter side of said chambers; a spring pressedvalve normally closing said port and provided with a piston member loosely fitting one of said chambers; a reciprocating member fitted to the other chamber and securedto' and movable with said valve; a removable member for closing the end of the first mentioned chamber and provided with a port communicating with said intercommunicating passage;
a small valve carried by said member; a spring also carried by said member for normally closing said small valve; a diaphragm superimposed upon said removable member and under the influence of the fluid pressure in said outlet opening; a member threaded to said casing inclosing said removable member and diaphragm and having a cylindrical hub provided with peripheral grooves; a button resting on said diaphragm; a plug threaded to said hub having a flat-sided shank; an adjusting member mounted on said shank and movable endwise thereof provided with a locking finger adapted to engage one of said peripheral grooves; a revoluble supporting plate carried by said plug; and a spring interposed between said plate and button.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing provided with inlet and outlet openings separated by a partition with a conically seated port and having cylindrical chambers on opposite sides of said port and in axial alinement therewith connected by an intercommunicating passage terminating at the outer ends of said chambers; a spring pressed valve normally closing said port and provided with a piston member loosely fitting one of said chambers; a reciprocating member fitted to the other chamber and secured to and movable with said valve; a removable member for closing the end of the first mentioned chamber and provided with a port communicating with said intercommunicating passage; a small valve carried by said member, a spring also carried by said member for normally closing said small valve; a diaphragm superimposed upon said removable member and under the influence of the fluid pressure in said outlet opening; a member threaded to said casing inclosing said removable member and diaphragm and having a cylindrical hub provided with peripheral grooves; a button resting on said diaphragm; a plug threaded to said hub having a flat-sided shank; an adjusting member mounted on said shank and movable endwise thereof provided with a locking finger adapted to engage one of said peripheral grooves; means for limiting the outward movement of said adjusting member; a revoluble supporting plate carried by said plug; and a spring interposed between said plate and button.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing provided with inlet and outlet openings separated by a partition with a conically seated port and having cylindrical chambers on opposite sides of said port and in axial alinement therewith connected by an intercommunicating passage terminating at the outer ends of said chambers; a spring pressed valve normally closing said port and provided with a piston member loosely fitting one of said chambers;
a reciprocating member fitted to the other chamber and secured to and movable with said valve; a removable cup-shaped member for closing the end of the first mentioned chamber and provided with a port communicating with said intercommunicating pasport and in axial alinement therewith con-- nected by an intercommunicating passage terminating at the outer ends of said chambers; a spring pressed valve normally closing said port and provided with a piston member loosely fitting one of said chambers; a reciprocating-member fitted to the other chamber secured to and movable with said valve; a smaller valve for controlling the flow of fluid through said intercommunicating passage; and adjustable means for regulating the operation of said smaller valve under the influence of the fluid pressure in said outlet opening.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing provided with inlet and outlet openings separated by a partition with a conically seated port and having cylindrical chambers on opposite sides of said port and in axial alinement therewith connected by an intercommunicating passage terminating at the outer ends of said chambers; a spring pressed valve normally closing said port and provided with a piston member loosely fitting one of said cham- .1 bers; a reciprocating member fitted to the other chamber secured to and movable with said valve; means foradmitting fluid pressure from the inlet opening through the intercommunicating passage to the second mentioned chamber beneath said reciprocating member to open the main valve; and adjustable means under the influence of the fluid pressure in the outlet opening'for regulating the movement of said valve and maintaining a predetermined pressure.-

In a device of the'class described, the combination of a diaphragm inclosing cap provided with a cylindrical hub having peripheral grooves at its outer end; a pressure regulating device including a plug threaded to said hubvand provided with a flat-sided shank; an adjusting member movable lengthwise of said shank. and -having a groove engaging finger; and means on the outer end of said shank for limiting the gutward movement of said adjust-ing mem- 12. In a device of the class described, the
ripheral grooves at its outer end; a pressure regulating device including a plug threaded to said hub and provided with a flat-sided shank; an adjusting member movable lengthwise of said shank and having a groove engaging finger; means. on the outer end of said shank for limiting the outward movement of said adjusting member; and means secured to the inner end of said plug coacting with a shoulder on said hub to limit the outward movement of said plug.
13. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a'casing having inlet and outlet openings separated by a partition having a conically seated opening therein; a downwardly closing main valve normally closing said opening and held closed by the high pressure fluid; a cylindrical chamber above said valve; a loosely fitting piston therein secured to sald valve; a second chamher beneath said valve communicating at the top with the outlet opening; a reciprocating member fitting said second chamber and se- -cured to said main valve; a downwardly opening secondary valve above said piston and controlling a passage from the first chamber to the second chamber with which it communicates at a point beneath said reciprocating member; a. pressure regulating spring acting on the upper end of the secondary valve to insert it against the high pressure; and a passage leading from the outlet opening to the lower side of the pressure regulating device to assistin forcing it away from the secondary valve.
