Abstract

662,150. Stuffing-box substitutes. SYNCRO MACHINE CO. Jan. 21, 1949. [March 23, 1948] No. 1741/49. Class 122(v). In a seal for preventing the interming- ling of liquids on opposite sides of a partition 10 through which a driven shaft 13 extends and including a liquid slinging ring 26 mounted for rotation with the shaft, and a pair of annular plates 22, 23, fixed in relation to said shaft, one of said plates, 23, lying adjacent the slinging ring 26, said plates together forming an annular compartment 27, a second slinging ring 21, having a generally conical form, extends into the compartment 27, and serves to impart centrifugal force to a liquid reaching it on one side thereof and to another liquid reaching it on the opposite side thereof. A drain pipe 28 communicates with the compartment 27 to discharge mixtures of the liquids. The shaft 13 is supported in a bearing 12 having a sealing ring 18 which discharges the second-mentioned liquid by centrifugal force into a drain passage 33. A plate 32 is provided overlying the slinging ring 26 to prevent direct entry of liquid sprayed from above into the space between said ring 26 and the adjacent plate 23.
