Abstract

1425121 Vibrators P GARDISCH and J GARDISCH 10 April 1973 [12 April 1972] 17079/73 Heading F2X A high frequency vibrator as used for example in soil compactors comprises an out-of-balance weight and a Pelton wheel turbine rotor mounted on a common shaft, a common housing for the weight and the rotor, an air vent to the housing, pressurized liquid drive means for the rotor, a liquid drain outlet from the housing and means for applying suction to the drain outlet. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, an out-of-balance weight 12 is mounted on a short shaft which also carries the rotor 10 of the turbine. The shaft is mounted in ball bearings (not shown). The rotor 10 is shaped to have a conical recess and the weight 12 is partly located within the recess so as to reduce the overall height of the vibrator. A venting device provided with a slot 19 is mounted in the cover 5 in order to relieve the inner space of the pressure caused by spraying a liquid under pressure against the vanes 13 of the rotor 10. A side wall of the housing base 1 has two nozzles 20, 21 for the injection of liquid under pressure connected via pipelines 22, 23 and control valves 24, 25 to a pump P. Depending on the setting of the valves 24, 25, nozzle 20 or 21 is supplied with pressurized liquid and the rotor 10 rotated in one or other direction. The liquid is evacuated by suction through an outlet 26 via a pipeline 27. The out-of-balance weight 12 is a semi-circular disc. Alternatively, the out-of-balance weight may be constituted by the rotor itself which is mounted eccentrically on its shaft (Fig. 4, not shown), or which is mounted concentrically (Fig. 5, not shown) and is out-of-balance owing to a kidney-shaped opening or recess. The liquid used may be a lubricating oil so that in addition to driving the vibrator it lubricates the bearings. In a modification shown in broken outline in Fig. 1, a device 32 connected to the control valves 24, 25 enables the pressurized fluid to be supplied to one nozzle for a short time immediately after cessation of the supply of fluid to the other nozzle in order to rapidly brake the turbine rotor.
