Abstract

670,938. Regulating fluid flow. BROWN BROS. & CO., Ltd., and WATERSTON, J. R. C. Nov. 23, 1950 [July 10, 1950], No. 17163/50. Class 135. The fluid seal described in Specification 636,301 is modified by substituting for the rotating screen of fluid emerging from an annular orifice at the mouth of the cylinder, a series of jets 3 so directed relatively to the axis of the cylinder 1 that the axis of each jet has an axial, a tangential, and a radial component. The jets issue from passages 4 formed in a ring clamped to the mouth of the cylinder, the passages being orientated with respect to the axis of the cylinder so that each has an axial, a tangential, and a radial component. Fluid is supplied to the annular chamber 5 by one or more pipes leading into it tangentially or radially. After the cylinder is filled, excess fluid streams away from the centre of the region bounded by the jets and drains back to a tank from which it is continuously pumped to the jets.
