Abstract
687,108. Cylinder liners. ATKINSON, A. E. Dec. 28. 1950 [Feb. 2. 1950], No. 2709/50. Class 122(i) A cylinder liner 5, Fig. 1, has a renewable wearing sleeve 9 which closely fits the liner bore 8 over the greater part of its length and is secured thereto against axial movement by a readily removable insert comprising one or more members, e.g. metal strips 16, Fig. 2, occupying at least the greater part of the circumferential extent of a substantially annular recess formed by oppositely located grooves 10, 11 in the sleeve exterior and the liner bore interior respectively; the insert or inserts 16 being removable through a passage or passages 12 extending outwardly from the recess to the exterior of the liner 5. The passages 12 are tangential to the recess and two strips 16 are driven in directions inclined at about 90 degrees through openings 13 so that they meet at a diametral point 17. In a modification the sleeve 9 is secured by casting a fusible alloy into the recess. A packing ring 15 is located in a groove 14 in the liner bore 8.
