Abstract

654,804. Pistons. KENNINGHAM, J. E. S. Nov. 18, 1948, No. 29949. [Class 122(i)] In a piston, the groove in which the piston ring is located, is provided with a stepped wearing ring or rings held against axial movement by a retaining ring and against radial movement by a step. A piston A is provided with one or more ring grooves D, and the faces 1, 2 of the groove are machined to increase the groove width and provide a recess 3. A stepped ring E is secured against the lower face thus formed by a spring-ring F divided at one point or by a non-spring ring F caulked into position or by a ring F formed in two halves. The upper face of the groove may be similarly treated. By this means a worn groove may be restored to its original size.
