Abstract
636,301. Regulating fluid flow. BROWN BROS. & CO., Ltd., and WATERSTON, J. R. C. March 8, 1948, No. 7040. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIII] A fluid seal for filling and retaining liquid within an open-ended cylinder 10 against gravitational or other forces comprises a rotating screen of fluid 12 emerging from a circular orifice 13 around the mouth of the cylinder and inclined to the axis thereof, the orifice being in communication with an annular chamber 14 into which sealing fluid such as water or steam is admitted tangentially at high velocity. The chamber 14 has two tangential inlets. The invention is described in connection with the retarding gear of catapults for launching aircraft (see Group XXXIII).
