Abstract
612,613. Hydraulic couplings. CLERK, R. C. Nov. 12, 1945, No. 30148. [Class 69 (ii)] In a hydro-kinetic coupling of the kind in which the reservoir for the operating liquid is provided within the rotating casing 4 of the coupling, direct and free communication between the vortex chamber formed between the opposed impeller 1 and runner 8 and the reservoir 21 is established through a continuous uninterrupted aperture 19 provided at the centre of the impeller around the shaft 11 of the runner. The impeller is provided with a fixed, or, as shown in Fig. 2, an automatically adjustable weir ring 25 which permits the operating liquid to move freely into the reservoir under starting conditions, and also with ports 24 which automatically return the liquid to the vortex chamber when the impeller is rotating at or above a predetermined speed. The ports 24 may be controlled by a form of centrifugally-operating valve.
