Abstract
538,043. Hydraulic couplings. SINCLAIR, H. April 17, 1940, No. 6927. [Class 69 (ii)] In a hydraulic coupling of the kinetic type including an annular working circuit which is formed by an impeller 10 and a runner 14 and in which fluid can circulate in the form of a vortex ring, the usual guide members which form a core around which the circulation proceeds are omitted and the coupling includes a deflector plate 34 on the boundary of the working circuit adapted to interrupt the flow of the vortex. The impeller and runner are each fitted with multiples of vanes each consisting of two long vanes 15 and one short one 16, the number of such multiples being determined by the formula N =14.67D, where D = outer profile diameter of the working circuit in inches and ranges from 9 upwards or the formula N=8-2D where D is in inches and ranges from 9 inches downwards. Other formulae are given. In a modification, the impeller and runner are built up of pressed steel and the vanes are spot-welded. The coupling also includes an outer member 19 connected to the impeller 10 and separated from the runner 14 so as to form a reservoir 22 of 20 per cent. capacity of the working chamber.
