Abstract

917,214. Hydraulic couplings. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. May 8, 1959 [May 9, 1958 (2)], No. 15935/59. Class 69 (2). A fluid coupling comprises impeller and turbine members 20, 26, contoured to provide circumferentially spaced pockets, some of the pockets of the members being out of registry with each other in a radial direction when the members are assembled in operative relation. The impeller and turbine members have vanes 64, 66, separating the pockets and the spacing between the vanes of one member may be different from that of the other member. The vanes are radially disposed and alternate pockets on each of the members are at different radial distances from the axis of the coupling to form two rings. The radii of the rings may be the same for both members or one ring 65, 75, Fig. 4, of each member may have the same radius and the remaining ring 73 of one member be at a larger radius and the remaining ring 63 of the other member be at a smaller radius. Instead of alternate pockets being at a different radii, the pockets may be arranged in groups, alternate groups having different radii. A scoop tube 48 disposed in a chamber 46 is provided to vary the amount of fluid in the coupling.
