897,907. Centrifugal pumps; hydraulic turbines. SULZER FRERES S.A. Feb. 22, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 6216/60. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). In or for an hydraulic storage power station, a single stage hydraulic machine adapted to act for long periods of time as a pump and for correspondingly long periods as a turbine comprises a casing, flow ducts common to both types of operation, a first guide ring and runner set designed for turbine operation, a second guide ring and runner set for pump operation, both sets having fixed blading and similar external configuration permitting them to be fitted interchangeably into the casing, and a casing cover removable to permit removal and insertion of the sets in the axial direction. A hollow shaft 1 carries a runner 2 illustrated in the upper half 2a as a turbine runner and in the lower half 2b as a pump runner. The runner is attached to the shaft 2 by bolts 3, 6. Sealing rings 9 carried by the runner cooperate with sealing rings 10 carried by shroud plates 11a or 11b and 12a or 12b. Since the runners have different diameters, the shroud plates and their flanges are interchanged when changing from one runner to the other. The outer radii of the two guide rings 14a, 14b are the same. The guide rings are secured in position by bolts 15. The runner chamber is enclosed by covers 16, 18. When it is desired to change from one runner to another, the pipe 22 is released and withdrawn. The bolts 3 and 6 are then removed and the runner supported by a cable through the shaft. The cover 18 and shroud plate 11 are then removed and the runner withdrawn. The guide ring 14 and shroud plates are then removed and alternative runner guide ring and shroud plates assembled in the reverse order.
