814,956. Bearings. ETABLISSEMENTS NEYRPIC, ATELIERS NEYRET-BEYLIER ET PICCARD-PICTET, and GROS, C. May 28, 1957 [May 28, 1956], No. 16955/57. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] In a turbine-driven drill for well-boring, a thrust supporting device for the rotatable shaft forming the turbine rotor is constituted by elementary thrust bearings which are incorporated in the bladed parts of the turbine. The turbine unit comprises an outer stator casing 14 which is supported at the lower end of the drill pipe, the stator blade elements 6A being secured within the casing by means of a lock-nut 13. The rotor shaft 11 has rotor blade elements 6B mounted thereon and secured by a lock-nut 12, the shaft 11 carrying at its lower end the drill bit. The working fluid enters the casing at O and after passing through the blade stages discharges through the centre of the shaft 11 around the drill bit. U-section rings 8 of moulded rubber are disposed round the shroud rings 7 of'the stator blades 6A, the cylindrical part of each ring 8 bearing against a spacer ring 9 disposed between each pair of adjacent rotor blade elements 6B, and the flange portions of each ring 8 bearing against the radial faces of the adjacent rings 10 of the rotor blade elements 6B. The rings 8 thus constitute radial and thrust bearings for supporting the rotor within the stator casing. The rings 8 may be formed of either natural or synthetic rubber or of a bearing metal. There may be a bearing on each stator blade shroud ring or only on say one in every three shroud rings. The blades mounted on the shaft may constitute the stator blades, the casing 14 then constituting the rotor. The shaft 11 may increase in diameter in steps from adjacent the inlet end so that the blades of the inlet end are longer than those remote therefrom, and the area of the thrust bearing associated therewith is larger.
