[Also in Groups XXII and XXVI] A turbine-driven propeller has a row of turbine blades mounted at their radially inner ends on a circumferentially continuous support ring extending around the tips of the propeller blades and a torque-transmitting connection between the ring and the propeller blades which will permit free radial expansion of the ring relative to the blades. The invention is described with reference to a fan comprising a hub 1 supporting a row of axial flow impeller blades 2, e.g. aircraft propeller blades, and having a row of turbine blades 3 mounted between an inner support ring 4 and an outer shroud ring 5. The impeller casing 6 is supported from the hub 7 by radial struts 8. A row of guide vanes 9, which may be adjustable, is also provided. The inner support ring 4 has a number of radially inwardly extending tangs 17, which engage in slots 18 formed in the leading edges of the impeller blades. The slots are closed by filler pieces 19. The inner support ring is so dimensioned that, when cool, it rests on the impeller blade tips. The tangs 17 are free to slide radially in the slots 18 and under running conditions there is a small clearance between the ring 4 and the impeller blade tips. In a modification, the impeller blade tips may be connected by a continuous ring and the tangs 17 engage slots in the ring. In another alternative the tangs may be fast with the impeller blades and slide in slots in the turbine support ring 4. The tangs 17 may transmit sufficient heat from the turbine blades to the impeller blades to have a valuable anti-icing effect.
