Abstract
824,270. Centrifugal compressors. DRESSER OPERATIONS Inc. Jan. 5, 1956, No. 479/56. Class 110 (1). Adjustable guide vanes at the inlet of a centrifugal compressor project from one face of a supporting disc into an annular channel ahead of the impeller, each vane having a shaft journalled in one of a number of holes spaced in a circle around a central aperture of the disc and a pinion attached to the other end of the shaft; an internal ring gear meshes with each pinion, means being provided for rotating the internal ring gear, and means are attached to the disc to form a substantially fluid-tight enclosure for the retention of lubricant. Each inlet guide vane 10 has a shaft 18 passing through the supporting disc 11 and carrying a pinion 19 set into a circular recess 20 in the disc. A ring gear 23, housed in a recess 21, has internal teeth meshing with the pinions 19 and external teeth 24 meshing with a pinion 25 which is connected through linkage 44 to a crank 47 which is actuated by manual or automatic means. The vanes 10 can be rotated from a fully closed position to, or beyond, a radial position. A ring 27 having a tongue-and-groove joint 28 with the disc 11 may carry fixed guide vanes 29 staggered circumferentially relative to the vanes 10, as shown in Fig. 1, the vanes 29 also being attached to an annular wall 16 having a tongue- and-groove joint 48 with the compressor casing 8. A back plate 30 is attached to the rings 11, 27 to form an enclosure for lubricant. The rings 11, 27, wall 16, and back plate 30 are split on a horizontal plane. The ring gear 23 is also split, with the ends 23A, 23B projecting beyond the horizontal plane and with some teeth removed to facilitate assembly. Lubricant is supplied at 39 to a circumferential channel 34 in each half of the ring 27.
