Abstract

796,494. Radial-flow turbines. CATTERMOLE, H. Oct. 26, 1955 [Oct. 26, 1954], No. 30862/54. Class 110 (3). An outward radial-flow turbine comprises a rotor disc 18 mounted on a shaft 29, the disc supporting two rows of rotor blades 23, 25 which are engaged by their roots in grooves formed in one face of the rotor disc. The rotor is disposed in a casing 10 which is formed with an inner wall 12 and a conical portion 13 to provide an annular gas inlet space 14 to which gas is supplied through a duct 50. Two or more gas inlet ports 15, 16 are disposed equiangularly in the wall 12 and curved inlet guide vanes 17 are disposed in the inlet ports. Stator blades are disposed between the two sets of rotor blades, the stator blades being in two arcuate sets 19, 20 and secured in grooves in the wall of the stator casing. Outlet ports 27, 28 corresponding to the inlet ports 15, 16 are provided, each outlet port being arranged radially with respect to an inlet port and the outlet ports being located in a common plane at right angles to the axis of the rotor shaft. The casing 10 is closed by means of a coverplate 11 which is formed with a central boss 45 in which one of the bearings 31 for the rotor shaft 29 is supported. The other shaft bearing 30 is disposed within the conical part 13 of the casing 10. A spring-loaded gas seal 42 is provided around the shaft. Specification 796,495 is referred to.
