692,286. Hydraulic couplings. VOITH GES., J. M. May 23, 1951 [Oct. 1, 1948; June 10, 1949], No. 12084/51. Class 69(ii) In a hydraulic coupling the ratio of the smallest diameter to the largest diameter of the blading of the impeller is larger than 0.4 and the bladed space within the runner communicates with a container situated substantially within the internal diameter of the impeller blading via apertures which are situated on a diameter corresponding to the internal diameter of the blading of the impeller. An impeller 21, Fig. 4, has a ratio D 1 to D 2 greater than 0.4. The runner 23 is formed with apertures 27 between the blades, which communicate with a container 28 formed between the impeller and the shaft. Blades 29 in the container are secured to the runner 23. In another construction, Fig. 2, the runner 16 is of less internal diameter than the impeller 15 and communicates with a chamber 18 which is shielded from the runner 15 by a wall 17 secured to the runner The Specification describes several modified constructions including constructions wherein a weir divides the container into two parts, an accumulator and a container, the accumulator communicating with the runner and the container, at its largest diameter with the working space through centrifugally actuated valves. Communication between the accumulator and container may also be controlled by a centrifugally actuated valve and in a further construction the two valves are coupled for joint action. The coupling may have a larger number of blades than normal. The volume of liquid in the coupling may be less than the total volume of the coupling including the container and substantially equal to twice the volume of the space which contains the impeller blading.
