Abstract

896.195. Hydraulic couplings. VOITH G.m.b.H., J. M. June 1, 1960 (June 2, 1959], No. 19458/60. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic coupling comprises an impeller 4 and runner 5 in a working circuit in unrestricted communication with a liquid chamber 8 rotatable with, and of substantially the same diameter as, the working circuit, a scoop tube or overflow device 9 adjustable within the range of the diameter of the working circuit, and a filling device 21 which is arranged to discharge liquid through a delivery pipe 20 into the working circuit, the scoop tube or overflow device 9 and the pipe 20 communicating with a common filling duct 18 which discharges into the working circuit. The impeller 4 is connected by gearing 2, 3 to a driving shaft 1 of an engine and the runner 5 is connected to an output shaft 6. The chamber 8 is formed by a casing 7 connected to the impeller and the scoop tube is secured to a shaft 12 and connected by a space 13 to a duct 14 which leads to a cooler 15 joined by a duct 16 to a valve 17, 23 in turn connected by the duct 18 to a filling space 19 and by the pipe 20 to the device 21 which may be of a two-stage centrifugal type pump. The movable part 23 of the valve is operated by a linkage joined to the shaft 12. In operation, the coupling is filled by liquid from the pump passing through the duct 18 and through the duct 16, cooler 15, duct 14 and scoop tube 9. When the orifice of the scoop tube is in its radially-innermost position, liquid withdrawn by the scoop tube passes through the duct 14, cooler 15, duct 16, valve 17, 23 and duct 18 to the filling space 19. Some of the liquid is by-passed to the sump 22 to utilize the cooling effect of the liquid therein, the pump 21 serving to replace the by-passed liquid and to replenish losses caused by leakage. The movable part 23 of the valve, may have a spring connection with the linkage so that when the scoop tube is moved rapidly outwards to empty the coupling, the pressure in the tube, and consequently in the duct 16, moves the valve to enable liquid to be returned to the sump through the pipe 20 against the delivery pressure of the pump. A manual or thermostatically-controlled valve may be included in the duct 18 to control the flow of liquid through the cooler. In other embodiments, the filling device may comprise an elevated tank or a gear-type pump which may be connected to the duct 14 between the scoop tube and cooler. A pressure-relief valve may be connected to the duct 14.
