Abstract

In a hydrodynamic coupling having an impeller 2 and a turbine 5 in a working chamber 14 and an auxiliary chamber 13 fast with the impeller, an inlet duct 12 for filling the working chamber from the auxiliary chamber is controlled by a centrifugally operated valve 15 which opens above a predetermined speed whilst an outlet duct 18 is controlled by a centrifugally operated valve 20 which closes above a predetermined speed. A spool 19 of the valve 20 moves transversely to the duct 18 so that when it is closed the fluid pressure in the duct 18 does not load the valve spool in its direction of motion. Ducts 25, 26 are provided in the turbine 5 to permit fluid to circulate between the turbine 5 and casing 4. Vent parts 23 screened by a ring 24 permit air exchange between the chambers 13, 14 when a fluid exchange occurs. Partitions 22 in the chamber 13 ensure that the fluid in the chamber rotates at the speed of the impeller.
