Abstract
1,074,451. Hydraulic couplings. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 17, 1964 [Dec. 18, 1962], No. 47792/62. Heading F2C. In an hydraulic coupling for driving a radiator cooling fan of the kind wherein a disc 16 fast with a driving shaft 14 is coupled by a fluid film to an output housing 12, 22 which includes a partition 21 that separates a reservoir from a working chamber and has an inlet part 28 controlled by a valve strip 31 in response to temperature or speed, an outlet duct 27 is disposed in a part of the housing which surrounds an annular gap between the disc 16 and housing and a projection 23 of the housing is formed on the trailing side of the duct 27 to force fluid through the duct whereby the working chamber may be almost completely emptied. The heading edge of the projection may be V- shaped with the duct located near the bottom of the V. Interdigitating annular lands are formed on the disc 16 and housing 12. The valve strip 31 may be carried by a shaft 30 the rotational position of which is controlled by a spiral bimetallic strip, Fig. 1 (not shown), or the valve strip may be controlled centrifugally.
