Abstract
1296604 Viscous shear coupling DAIMLERBENZ AG 4 Dec 1970 [5 Dec 1969] 57769/70 Heading F2C A viscous shear coupling, e.g. in the drive for an I.C. engine cooling fan, comprises a driving disc 12 in a working chamber 13 in a driven housing 14, the viscous liquid being fed to the working chamber from a reservoir 18 in the housing by a non-rotary scoop tube 27 adjusted in accordance with I.C. engine coolant temperature and delivering to an intermediate driven chamber 21 defined by walls 22, 23, the liquid being fed from the intermediate chamber via those holes 25 spirally arranged in wall 22 which are immediately adjacent the radially inner surface of the liquid in the working chamber. Holes or slots 29 in the driving disc 12 ensure distribution of the liquid to both sides of the disc. Discharge holes 24 are provided at the outer periphery of the wall 22 connecting the working chamber directly to the reservoir. Again, Fig. 2 (not shown), the intermediate chamber (20a) is wider axially at its outer diameter and tapers inwardly so that liquid flows more or less rapidly into the working chamber depending on the effective radial position at which it is flowing into the chamber.
