Abstract

1,080,722. Hydraulic couplings. SCHWITZER CORPORATION. Sept. 22, 1964 [Sept. 27, 1963], No. 38624/64. Heading F2C. To control slip in a coupling of the fluidshear type used, e.g. to drive the cooling fan of an I.C. engine, a flow-directing plug 39 in an elongated slot (40), Fig. 1 (not shown), connecting a liquid reservoir 23, Fig. 2, with the working chamber 24 of the coupling, is moved by heat, speed &c. variations between a position in which it extends into the liquid in the working chamber, and thus directs liquid therefrom through the slot (40) into the reservoir so as to increase the slip, and another position where it lies inside the reservoir 23, and thus permits liquid to flow into the working chamber 24 and decrease the slip. With decreasing slip, the radial depth of the liquid in the working chamber 24 increases and overlies the plug 39 &c. The radial position of the plug 39 &c. is determined so as to obtain a required minimum slip in the coupling under working conditions. As shown, the plug 39 is carried on the end of a bimetallic strip 34 which, with increasing temperature, withdraws the plug into the reservoir 23. Alternatively, the plug 39 may be speed controlled as described in Specification 1,036,231. The coupling comprises an input shaft 12 fast with a disc 26 having holes 32 through which toroidal liquid flow takes place to assist heat dissipation, and has facings 28, 51. The surrounding working chamber 24 is formed in a hub 10 to which an engine cooling fan can be bolted. Cooling fins 10a (18a) are provided on the hub and the wall of the reservoir. The liquid used is preferably silicone oil.
