Abstract

1,084,730. Hydraulic couplings. SCHWITZER CORPORATION. Dec. 3, 1964 [Dec. 13, 1963], No. 49184/64. Heading F2C. In a shear-type fluid coupling, for driving an engine radiator cooling fan, of the kind wherein a disc 26 fast with a driving shaft 18 is coupled by a fluid film to an output housing 10, 11, 12 which includes a partition 22 that separates a reservoir 23 from a working chamber 24 and permits flow of fluid therebetween through an interconnecting port 40 (Fig. 3, not shown) disposed ahead of and under the control of an impact type pump plunger 39, the inner end plate 10, of the housing, is centrally flanged to form a bearing hub 16 and is integrally formed with radially extending arms 10a (Fig. 1, not shown) forming a fan spider to which fan blades (not shown) may be bolted, the fan spider additionally serving to directly dissipate heat from the working chamber 24. The pump plunger 39 is secured to a strip 34 which, for maximum coupling effect for fan drive, is biased by its own resiliency to an inoperative position, in which the end of the plunger 39 is flush with the partition surface in the working chamber, when a plunger 67 is moved outwardly by a bimetal strip 63 responsive to the temperature of the engine coolant or the air flowing through the radiator, and is moved inwardly by the plunger 67 to pump fluid out, at port 40, from the working chamber into the reservoir to reduce the coupling effect on temperature reduction. Slots or apertures 28 and inclined channels 29 formed in the disc 26 (Fig. 4, not shown) permit toroidal circulation of fluid in the working chamber.
